Lenge leve Det Norske Institutt i Athen!

Greece needs all the international help it can get. Now that funding for archaeological projects keeps getting reduced, the work of organizations like the Norwegian Institution at Athens is critical. We can’t let these ancient monuments slip into further ruin.

The Norwegian Institute at Athens is one of 18 international schools for classical studies, archaeology, and cultural history in Greece, which are officially recognised by the Greek Ministry of Culture. This privilege forms the basis for a close Greek-Norwegian cooperation, and for an extensive European, and global, cultural exchange. The Institute at Athens gives Norwegian professionals a unique access to a network of international research institutes, cultural institutions, libraries, archives, and laboratories. Greece is not only important to the archaeological and classical research but has currently gained increasing importance for the study of crises in modern western societies. Researchers from all over the world, and from all disciplinary backgrounds, meet in Athens in order to work together and exchange ideas, with topics spanning from prehistoric times to the present day.

This would - for example - severely damage the Nordic Library in Athens, an important research library jointly managed by the Norwegian, Danish, Finnish and Swedish institutes!

It is important to support the Liberal Arts, whose western expression began in Greece. Ancient Greece was also the source of western political ideas and aesthetic ideas in the plastic, graphic and performing arts. Furthermore, Greece today is threatened by the failure of the very ideas and ideals that it first embodied: public service has morphed into venality, enterprise and hard work have deteriorated to early retirement and a hand out to the State.

Therefore it is very important that those countries, such as Norway, who derive their intellectual and political heritages from ancient Greece and best express them in their polity maintain the closest possible intellectual contacts with Greece, to the benefit of both Greece and Norway.

In these days, Norway has a huge growth of philosophical studies. The students opportunity to travel to the birthplace of philosophy is without a doubt a huge booster of increasing this growth, and every connection between Norway and Greece should stay strong. To put down the institute in the heart of Greece, would be a grave mistake and should be avoided by all costs. Not only for the philosophy students, but for all connection and network that, in these days, uses this opportunity.

I'm signing because the Norwegian Institute was at the heart of some of the happiest days in my life. In 2004 I discovered a new home while studying at the institute. It's hard to imagine the Athens that I learned to love without it.

The Norwegian Institute is a vital part of the scholarly and educational profile of Norway, and an important part of the international community of scholars in the Mediterranean. To close it will close off the opportunity for Norwegian students and faculty to participate in research in Greece, and end a means by which the international profile of Norway is presented to people from many countries across the world--not just Greeks.
