Oppose National Park Name Change to Waimarino

I strongly feel if sometime isn't broken, don't fix it. A lot of valuable hours and money has gone into making this name known. If the name is changed who is going to come up with all that money and time to do it again.

Because I believe 100% this about CONTROL.....and anti Pakeha racism......the town was has always been National Park.....and there is NO good reason to change it.....National Park is the name of the town....Waimarino is the name of the area.....simple as that.

I am the foundational Chairman of the National Park Community Council. I formulated the initial Civil Defence Plan for the village. After 30 years plus of community involvement and leadership I have a significant stake in the ongoing entity which is the National Park Village. To change the name would be spurious and injurious to the township, it's people and the legions of past dwellers who identify with and cherish the rich and colourful actuality....WHICH IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE.... "THE PARK!!"

The name "Waimarino" relates to an area in the southern part of the Ruapehu District.
The Waimarino A & P Show is held in Raetihi (an example).
"National Park Village" is the perfect name.
Don't even contemplate changing it.

I have lived in National Park 35 years and in that time I have not heard National Park referred to as Waimarino.

The veracity of the name change application is very questionable with unsubstantiated and misleading information and a media campaign to suit, in parts blatantly and factually untrue. My belief based on historical information is Waimarino refers to the District area and predominantly the Southern portion of Ruapehu around Raetihi where many entities to this day still use Waimarino in their naming. A good example is the upcoming Waimarino A&P Show est 1913 in Raetihi, not National Park, and not Waimarino. The area around Erua is known as the Waimarino Plains.

Ngatokurua Pa, Waimarino (Plains) was est by Chief Peehi Hitaua who I believe originated in Wanganui. Iwi and the applicant should be encouraged to reinstate the Pa and village at the old historic location of Waimarino, on the Waimarino Plains at that location shown on the applicants maps. This location is also known as Erua Station, later Township and now Waikune. Hence this would be re-creating a Pa and a Town they could rename its original name of Waimarino in respect and memory of Chief Peehi and his family and their Iwi.

I’m breed, born 1978, raised and lived in Taumarunui. I have ridden horses, motorbikes, bicycles and walked all over this whenua. Literally National Park and all the way around Retaruke, to Kirikau, Ohura, Waimiha, Waituhi, to Kuratau, Otukau, the 42 Traverse back to Kakahi, Taumarunui.
NPV is our NATI PARK and what keeps the circle complete.
Waimerino pfft, doesn’t even fit

The evidence shows that Waimarino Pa is south of National Park and by changing the name you are taking the away the heritage of those that built National Park to what it is today

The current name has historical significance and is well known. I have visited NP on numerous occasions and have family ho have been living there for decades.A name change would affect businesses that operate in the area. They are known for their location. Any change could put their future at risk, especially as far as international tourism is concerned. Do not change the name!

I do not believe the UENUKU submission for change has the history, dates and locations correct. I was born in Raetihi 1956. I attended National Park primary School as did my daughter and Grand daughter. Never were our Māori culture teachings from the the southern Waimarino approach but most learnings and Waiatas taught were from the Eastern Tuwharetoa connections. My parents first business was a Tearooms purchased in 1954 which consequently grew into the first grocery 4 square chain in the Village. They built the 3rd Lockwood house in NZ. Our hospitality evolved with further successful business ventures with our families building the village in tourism, sporting rental, Fuel and service garage, licensed restaurants. My father was an instructor to the timber industry at Waikune Prison. He was a founding member of the National park Ski Club and encouraged many youth to learn and enjoy the sport. Families that lived in the village expanded community ammenities with dedicated community spirit. The objection to the name change submitted by the village people 1968 is No different today other than being detrimentally worse confusion with Waimarino naming being used so widely throughout NZ. In conclusion Our NPV has evolved, grown with a sense of community comradeship, business pioneers along with Natural disasters, economic and climate hardships to have established a very well known service town to the world.

National Park Village às a name celebrates New Zealand's first national park, and has been the name of my town for the entire time I've lived there.

I ran a business supplying other business in "National Park" for 25 years and still live close and often visit National Park business now

Theres no logical reason to adopt the name that was discarded years ago for the confusion it caused then and will in the future. Erasing a towns identity that was built by the setllers to the area. The name aint perfect but certainly better than the confusion thats going to result and was the reason the name National Park Village was adopted. This all to support political correctbness and egos to have their name in history.

Colin Baker (Owhango, 2024-01-27)

This move is a long term move of the maori, trying to get National Park handed to them. Starting by changing the name, so that they can then take over ownership. Actually the moari are wanting it handed back to them for nothing. As a so called treaty settlement.

It is the beginning of an end, and it will not happen.

Kevin Siemonek (National Park, 2024-01-28)

I completely oppose changing The National Park's name for the reason being, IT IS IT'S NAME!!
NOT SOMETHING TOURISTS CANNOT PRONOUNCE.
It's ridiculous to even think about!!!!

We need to stop all this bullshit where self appointed shit for brains think that they have a right to push ideas like this for no other reason but self elevation.

National Park Village is The National Park Village! A hub for the needs of the visitors to The National Park and community. It's name describes what it is and does. I have been a skier, hiker and visitor to the area and to relatives who work and live in National Park Village, for 60 years.

Gail Justice (Auckland, 2024-01-28)

I am supporting the local whanau (Maori and Pakeha) who do not want a name change. The name change is supported by mainly people that are not from National Park and have no roots here.

Miki Bos (National Park, 2024-01-28)

I’ve known this place my whole life. Skiing in the winter, belonging to a ski club. My parents moved here. It doesn’t seem logical to change it. Whomever came up with the reason to change it has too much time on their hands. I embrace change but some things should be left as they are.

Tracey Snowden (Aucklanf, 2024-01-28)

It makes no sense
The name is the identity of national park
Changing the name is irrelevant and serves no purpose or any benefit of doing so

I’m proud to be raised in national park

I strongly oppose the name change. The name National Park Village identifies the very spot that it is today and has always been .

Waimarino is associatated with Raetehi / Ohakune area.
Not around here.
It will add confusion. And incorrect localtion definition.
I dont want it changed

Born & breed in Waimarino District
Owned number of houses & businesses over the years in National Park consider this my backyard
Still own business in the region
Have asked my 93 year old Dad for his view as travelled by train since he was 18yrs old from Waiouru
Waimarino alway known as a region or District
Move on not backwards - don’t waste money unnecessarily

Lynette Baker (Taupō, 2024-01-28)

I strongly disagree with outside interests trying to change the name

Steve Carr (Raurimu, 2024-01-28)

Because National Park is known from world wide as National Park and if we change it we will lose a lot of business.

Ainsley Siemonek (National Park, 2024-01-29)

#111

I don't want to change for no good reason. If it isn't life threatening I would prefer to keep the name as it is 'National Park' with no additions or subtractions

John Visser (Owhango, 2024-01-29)

#112

I agree with all said above. Plus its just an unnessary decision. More based on emotion, and sentimentality, not practicalness.
Its only going to cause added un wanted expences to locsl bisiness owers as well, by having to change signs, letterheads, business cards etc, bring their actual identity as we know them.Everyone has an established business, that is their reputation. Its only going to be counter productive.
I disagree with changing its name to Waimarino.

Heather McKinnon Siemonek (National Park, 2024-01-29)

#116

I believe the name National park represents the area,
I also do not understand the meaning in moari, and it is not a language I will ever use , nor is it viable to use.
Things are good the way they are , so why bother changing it

Rod Blackburn (Picton, 2024-01-30)

#125

I do not want to see a name change from what the name is and has been forever. Idiots have got to stop running around putting their idiotic ideas upon others. Have you got nothing better to do with your time whilst wasting ours? Get a life leave things be.

David Jordan (Tokaanu, 2024-01-31)

I grew up down the road in Taumarunui and have always loved national park why change a name that everyone knows and a name it has always been , changing its name is taking away its identity

I lived at Whakapapa village and went to school in National Park, it’s always been called National Park. We identify this place as National Park. The name does not need to change

Tanya Stieglbauer (Taupo, 2024-02-02)

#139

I don't agree with the name change, there are alot of people who have done alot of work making National Park Village what it is and it will be lost. It's so disrespectful to them.

Maria Splitt (National Park, 2024-02-02)

Pa site isn’t under national park. In my mind Waimarino is the whole are not national park specifically.

Brad Furner (Hamilton, 2024-02-02)

Steve McGill (Raurimu, 2024-02-04)

I believe that the current name National Park is well known and the people living in the village all want it to remain National Park Village. Plus the cost and confusion of changing the name is not worth it. The people who want to change it should just move on.

Andrew Barge (Auckland, 2024-02-04)

#157

I have spent many winters in national park and have lots of close friends who still live there. It has its own identity and I feel its wrong to rip that away from the community that built it!!

Billy Barge (Auckland, 2024-02-04)

#171

Name change to confusing

Marion Adsett (Palmerston North, 2024-05-15)

#172

The changing to Place names to Maori names has got to the point where these towns no longer have an identity that can be recognized by most New Zealanders and next to useless for attracting Tourism to these townships.
