Widen Austin Road

Progress Update 3

Hi,

Long time between drinks, but here is an update on the widening of Austin Road.

My enquiry:

I am enquiring on behalf of local residents.

Over 2 years ago a petition was presented to council for the widening of several narrow parts of Austin Rd near Heritage Way.  It was in the 8th Oct 2020 I&S agenda.  
There was a commitment to investigate and report back, which included seeing if the road could be widened as part of an imminent subdivision.
If the widening could not be done as part of that, the widening was to be budgeted in the next round of budgeting.

Please provide an update for this.

Hi Matt,

We were unable to get the extra widening works included in the current subdivision works.

We had a reseal planned for Austin a couple of years ago and hoped to have the widening done as part of that but the reseal was deferred.The reseal is planned for next financial year after the subdivision works and we will again attempt to do the widening as part of those works.

However, the future programme is subject to change due to the impact of the recent Cyclone damage and the cost of repairs Council is facing but we will attempt to have the widening included when the reseal is eventually completed.

I note some minor improvements were done as part of the recent subdivision, however the requested widening was not able to be completed. Here's hoping it can be included in next financial year as per above (starting 1 July 23).

Progress Update 2

Hi,

Our petition was tabled at the October Council Infrastructure and Services committee meeting where it was agreed to assess Austin Rd.

Since then I have discussed with one of the Roading managers who advises that Council is aiming to do some resealing work before June and is working to see if some widening can be incorporated.  

If it cannot be incorporated, given that this work has not been budgeted, funding will need to be sought through the standard Long Term Plan budgeting process commencing next year, with funds becoming available 2022.

I asked whether centre lines could be painted on in the interim, however the existing widths are deemed too narrow and it is believed to be safer to leave as is, which encourages drivers to slow down as necessary.

I will let you know more as I find out.

Austin Road Petition - Progress Update

Hi,

Thanks for your input into the petition.  We had a total of 66 signatures.

It has now been submitted to Whangarei District Council aiming to be presented at Council's Infrastructure and Services Committee scheduled for October.

I will keep you posted of further progress as I am made aware.
