Update on movement you all helped support!

2024-05-07 18:12:33

Hello Parents,

I wanted to update you on our progress in holding Christian Enwright and those who enabled his inappropriate behavior accountable. Our efforts extend beyond this; I am working to urge Wisconsin lawmakers to amend current legislation, specifically defining and addressing grooming behaviors, and revisiting the statute of limitations to empower more victims to seek justice.   I've been in touch with Chief Patton, Mayor Bogdala, and State Representative Tim McGuire, the author of Wisconsin Act 200 recently signed into law by Governor Evers. We're planning an in-person meeting later this month to discuss how we can refine the law to address grooming more effectively. Currently, the law allows law enforcement to contact DPI for licensure suspension or revocation in cases of pending charges or convictions. KUSD's delayed response until a parent's direct contact with DPI highlights the need for improved protocols. Enwright's license is under investigation according to the DPI website due to this parent calling them. Chief Patton supports stricter laws encompassing adults in positions of trust like teachers, coaches, daycare providers, and parents.   Today, there's a closed school board meeting at 5 pm to discuss Enwright's termination. Your continued support and advocacy have been pivotal in pushing for substantial change within KUSD's protocols and policies regarding teacher-student interactions.

Here are a couple of actions you can take:

1. Some parents are meeting at the KUSD District Office during the closed board meeting today. While public attendance and comments will not be allowed for a portion of this meeting, your presence would be impactful.

2. Please continue sharing the petition. We currently have 1,054 signatures, but we need more to demonstrate the depth of our concerns to Representative McGuire and ensure lasting change when I meet with him later this month.   The consequences of inaction are significant, affecting not just our children but countless others within the district.

Our collective efforts will demand accountability and establish clear protocols and laws to protect against child predators. Please take a moment to share the petition and consider joining other parents at the closed school board meeting tonight at 5 pm.

Thank you for your ongoing support

Update following board meeting

2024-04-25 18:46:43

Dear Members of my Community,

I have been in contact with a member of the board that fully supports our calls to action and things that can be implemented to ensure this never happens again. The board member has been a strong voice to advocate for our children and has raised concerns regarding how the district navigates through these sensitive matters with students/ victims and parent and law enforcement involvement at the onset of discovering these issues with teachers and inappropriate behavior with students.

Here is what they shared:

The board just recently was aware of the allegations of this teacher. The board member found out from another parent. Leadership and administration at the school level know way before a board does. The board member has talked about policy and the need to have a parent present at ANY TIME that a school employee speaks to a child /student about such a sensitive subject.

The board member stands for no teacher or member of administration speaking to a child about the content of the situation happening at KTEC without parental presence. The board member has been vocal about this at closed meetings.

The board member expressed the night of the meeting everyone demanded the termination of Mr. Enwright however the board was just recently told about the situation. They have no say, no pull and usually minimal information when things like this happen. If a new policy is made, then they also have to make sure that if is lawful and has due process.

The board member has also reported to HR that Mr. Enwright has been in zoom teacher meetings and while not in the building but is engaging in planning for the next year. The district has to “place” him as if he has a job because he has not been fired or prosecuted. The board member agrees parents should have been told sooner, this however falls solely on Mr. Hodges. The board member emphasized If we jump the gun and start accusing without due process then he can turn around and sue the district and get paid a full wage to age 65 all on tax payers dollars. They further shared It is a very sticky situation and it’s unfortunate that he could get away with earning a salary without even working if we do one thing wrong. The board member shared everything that allegedly happened by school standards he should be fired. By law and civic law and standards that may not be the case.

The administration at KTEC are also to blame seeing as the board member has had several teachers tell them that in years past, that this inappropriate behavior was reported by two teachers. The board member further relayed that they will continue to do what is right by our students and that a board members hands are tied until it comes to an executive meeting or a closed meeting for recommendation on what to do next whether that be to be a leave of absence and or termination.

The board member has advocated for a crucial policy change, highlighting the necessity of parental presence during any sensitive discussions between school employees and students. They firmly stand against teachers or administrators engaging in such conversations without parental supervision, a stance they have vocalized during closed meetings. During the recent meeting, the board member conveyed the widespread demand for Mr. Enwright's termination, although the board had only recently been made aware of the situation. They emphasized their limited authority and access to information in such cases, stressing the importance of ensuring any new policy is both legal and fair.

Additionally, the board member reported Mr. Enwright's involvement in virtual teacher meetings, despite not being physically present in the building. They highlighted the district's obligation to "place" him in a job role until official decisions are made regarding his employment status. While acknowledging the delay in informing parents, the board member attributed this to KTEC administration. They cautioned against hasty actions without due process, citing potential legal repercussions that could burden taxpayers if mishandled. What this specifically means is that Mr. Enwright can turn around and sue the district and get paid a full wage to age 65 all on tax payers dollars.

Despite acknowledging that Mr. Enwright's alleged actions warrant dismissal based on school standards, the board member acknowledged the complexities of legal and civic procedures that might influence the outcome. Furthermore, the board member criticized KTEC's administration for previous reports of inappropriate behavior, indicating a commitment to prioritize student welfare moving forward. They expressed the need for executive or closed meetings to determine the appropriate course of action, which could include a leave of absence or termination, highlighting the constraints faced by board members until such decisions are formally recommended. It's understandable to feel frustration towards the school board and absent members during the recent meeting, especially given the sensitive nature of the situation. It's crucial to remember that the board, like everyone else, was only recently informed about what happened.

The primary responsibility lies with the KTEC administration for not adhering to or lacking proper policies and for independently deciding on the course of action. It's concerning that HR was aware of the situation, as noted in the police report, yet failed to report it to the school board. This highlights a significant gap in communication and responsibility within the administration. I am working on an action plan in response to this new information. Identifying areas of improvement and advocating for better policies.

To be really honest – my mind is further blown and need to collect my thoughts and emptions because yes - I’m pissed off now even more.

All:

As part of the ongoing commitment to promoting positivity and ensuring a safe environment at KTEC, I believe it is crucial to address recent developments concerning a teacher at KTEC-West. While I appreciate the strides made by in supporting students, there is a pressing concern regarding student safety and the actions taken by KTEC staff, including the principal, assistant principal, and other teachers.

The situation involving Mr. Christian Enwright, a 7th-grade teacher at KTEC-West, has raised significant questions about our school's protocols and the steps being taken to safeguard our students. It is imperative that we engage in thoughtful discussions to address these issues comprehensively and proactively.

I propose that we initiate a dialogue with school administration, fellow parents, and faculty members to ensure transparency and accountability in handling such sensitive matters. Together, we can work towards implementing measures that prioritize student safety and well-being, while also maintaining the positive environment we strive for at KTEC.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter, and I look forward to collaborating with you all to address these concerns effectively.

Best regards,

(Your Name)
