It seems interesting that the organisers have taken the IGU meeting to the infamous military school ,perhaps to show that any thing like brutal force to oppress is a phenomena that is bound to die out. but accademicia is not to be dictated as an demonostratve tool to prove something ,rather it requires conditions for thought and creativity that needs to be free of all such burdens of tremendous violation of Human rights and therefore explicit acknowledgment and commitment to discuss such issues at the venue/conference must surely be a prerequisite. A site like this must be avoided given its history until and unless there is such acknowledgment/commitment I join to call for an alternative venue for the IGU conference.

Fantastic comments! Thanks all for all the immensly valuable support! Just a clarification: the military school has never been mentioned in any report by authorities, neither mlitar nor civil, as a place of torture and murder, although it has been well identified by two official reports on human rights violation. Other torture centra have been recognized and transformed into museums for the National Memory and Human Rights. But not the military School! That is why it is naive to believe that the UGI can wash the history away through one speech or two. That is a historical task for the chilean society in general and in this particular case for chilean geographers - many of them protesting through rejecting meet inside this place of horror.
