Life sentence for the rape of 17 year old maiden.
On the 10th of September the province of Kwa Zulu Natal Celebrated its annual Umkhosi Womhlanga Reed Dance. However the day also became a life changing moment for 17 year old maiden. Siboniso Dlomo (29) an educator and relative of 17 year old maiden Asanda Bhengu was asked to take her home after the reed dance, however on their way he viciously raped her.
According to research by the South African Medical Research Council South Africa has the highest rape rate in the world of 132.4 which is some 66.196 incidents in per 100 000 people.
In the first quarter of 2023 (Jan-March) Kwa Zulu Natal experienced an increase by 113 incidents as compared to previous quarter. A total of 2130 reported cases. The reality is that 40% of women will be raped in their lifetime and sadly about only about 14% get convicted
In terms of the Criminal Law - Sentencing Amendment Act (No 38 of 2007) a regional court can sentence a person who has been found guilty of rape to imprisonment for life.
As Civil Society organizations we are calling for the maximum sentencing if Perpetrator is found guilty. However in order for that to be realised - we request case to be moved to Regional court where it can be trialed in accordance to the life changing criminal act emposed on 17 year old Ms Bhengu.
