Having survived a malignant melanoma at 27 years of age, I cannot understand why people continuously and voluntarily put themselves at such high risk of skin cancer. Apart from premature aging, sunbed use is widely know to cause many different forms of skin cancer, one of the deadliest being malignant melanoma. With such good quality tanning lotions available these days, there is no need for tanning salons, and I firmly believe they should be banned.

(Limerick, 2017-04-17)

#267

I survived malignant melanoma. I used sun beds for years from the age of 16. People need to be educated and realise the dangers are very real...I never really thought skin cancer was a "real cancer" until I was diagnosed at 32 with melanoma and told that this type of skin cancer was the deadliest and the fact that it could kill me was very real. Ban the beds.

We have a very strong history of melanoma in our family & I lost my Dad (aged 66) to advanced melanoma. Genetics plays a huge role so why would anyone want to expedite getting melanoma by using a sun bed. I used them when I was younger & totally unaware so I worry about this now.

(Galway, 2017-04-29)

I am Irish and burn easy, I am 31years old and a friend of mine uses the sun beds often and uses very little or no sunscreen and she has pale Irish skin and the effect of ageing alone not to mention possible skin cancer effects are very visible and there is just no talking to her, even when she does get burnt she wont even use aloe vera or after sun and she is delusional that she wont get a tan if she uses such products. I can only imagine the long term effects she will have. I myself burn easily and always apply sunscreen much to the annoyance of my peers esp when on hols always stopping to apply but I cant stand getting burnt and then to think a cancer could form just by not looking after my skin when it is so easy to actually protect yourself. I really support getting rid of the beds altogether!
