I am a Property owner. I own a small holding in an Agricultural area. I was not handed this property, nor did I inherit it from family.I grew up with a single mother and absent father. My mom died from a gunshot wound to the head when I was 17 years old.
I have this property because I worked for it. I started working (waiting tables) when I was 16 years old. I’ve put myself through my studies with money from work. I’ve worked hard, I’ve developed myself and at the end of the day I own property.
I bought a fixer upper, with the intention of renovating and improving my home as money becomes available from work and savings. Due to the uncertainty regarding property ownership and rights in this country I refuse to put another cent into this house for fear of the government just ‘taking it’. Why must I pump more money and more sweat and tears into something I might lose? Doesn’t make sense. I doubt I am the only property owner who feels this way.
What are the consequences?
- Not stimulating the economy. Building materials I would have bought will not be bought.
- Job losses. Cashiers, customer service consultants, plumbers, builders, painters who would have been used... won’t. Small businesses and retailers will suffer. They could cut jobs to keep their business afloat.
- Banks revenue declining. I wanted to take a bank loan to do my kitchen. I won’t anymore. Also when my property is ‘taken’ I will not continue paying my bond. Why should I?
You only have to look north of the border to see the impact decisions such as these have on a country’s currency and economy. You will not be improving the economic situation of the previously disadvantaged.... you will be making it worse.
Nobody is saying that there shouldn’t be measures put into place to help align people and to repair the damage of the past, but this isn’t it. This won’t make anything better, it will make it worse.

I dont own property however, the whole situation of just taking what one has worked for is wicked and evil, it is as good as stealing. No one cares anymore about the white or indian or the brown population, we have strived to build this nation and this included building up the many black folk in this country, but the new generation youth who were never brought up with true discipline firmly believe that we stole this land. If that is the case, why is the state first and foremost not charged for land theft? Secondly why are the banks not charged on the same charge? They did afterall sell the land to the farmers and likewise to everyone else that was working and could afford to buy property. Landgrab without compensation is just plain theft, no matter how you sugar coat it.Bruce Piek (Benoni, 2018-10-22)
