I was once a mother who sat next to a little bed in the NICU. Every minute we had together was precious and vital for my child. To think parents only have a few minutes with their child is an unbearable thought.Roeline Van Eck (Johannesburg, 2020-05-05)

Skin to skin is good evidence based care for premature infants and is vital in infant survival and mother-infant bonding. Having the parent as the primary caregiver of an infant in NICU reduces the burden on staff and ensures a shorter stay in the NICU as babies do better. The infant has a basic human right to care from his or her parents.Sally Baker (Bryanston, 2020-05-06)

It is of paramount importance to have the babies form a bond with their mother. Had they not been prematurely, they would have still be in the womb, what is the difference? You are cruelly depriving these child of something that is hugely necessaryJayne Goss (Brackenfell, 2020-05-06)

I had two premature babies. One born at 31 weeks back in 2015 and the other born at 29 weeks in Jan 2020.They both are thrieving and healthy. The dr was amazed at our 29weekers progression. All due to skin to skin. It really does save lives.

The need of a baby for its mother's presence and touch, is one of the most basic human needs. For a prematurely born baby, this need is vital. And during a pandemic or other disaster, it is extra important for mother and baby to be together as much as possible.Ena Du Plessis (Johannesburg, 2020-05-10)

The bond between mom and baby can only be formed by physical touch, and it is crucial to have that bond. The baby may feel rejected and hence take longer to recover, or even give up the will to live if there is no bond/physical touch from the motherSusan Kruger (Waterval Boven, 2020-05-11)

My baby was in nicu for a week.it was the longest week of my life. I cried so much. What would the difference be if I could see my baby for longer? I had to rush my breastfeeding and get out of there. Broke my heart. My baby has improved way more since being home. She kept loosing weight while there and went from 2.8 to 3.2 since being home in a matter of days. Babies needs their mommies. It felt like I had no right or say when it came to my baby.Melani Walsh (Cape town, 2020-05-11)

Babies need skin to skin especially from their mothers when born! Not only does it make their bond stronger but in most cases they can heal pre-mature infants just by hearing their moms heart beat!Callan Du Plessis (Boksburg, 2020-05-11)

I feel & I know babies who are in need of hearing their mothers voices close by & have the skin contact. It improves their progress regardless of their condition. I had sat with my daughter when her son was born a month premature & had breathing difficulties & apnea.I watched the monitors when she spoke to him how they changed . I notice a dramatic change when she eventually was allowed skin to skin contact when she tried desperately to breast feed him. The quicker these babies are allowed to get closer & have skin to skin contact the quicker they will recover..
My heart is breaking to see my daughter in law going to see her son who had breathing difficulties when he was born by caesar section and had fluid on his lungs. In NICU the nurse/sister telling her she must not touch him. Since she did touch him & talk really close to him he has improved so much and now finally after 3 days they have allowed her to actually hold him his breathing has improved & although he is breathing unassited they still have the pipes & tubes on him.
Please we have to do skin to skin as soon as possible.

My baby was born 7 weeks prem on the 5th of April and spent 17 days in NICU. We have been on the receiving end of restricted visitation with the resultant limited kangarooing, difficulties establishing breastfeeding, and the emotional trauma of the separation and rules that changed daily. It is essential for babies optimal health to have skin to skin care it stabilizes babies breathing temperature heartbeat reduces stress hormones fires the right side of babies brains to produce oxytocin the love hormone.KMC is important for attachment and bonding and breastfeeding essential for parents well being.Parents need to spend as much time as possible with their newborns.KMC and KFC skin to skin care coloniizes baby with parents healthy bacteria. These new Restricted lockdown rules for babies in NICU are cruel and harmful to the mother baby dyad.Pauleen Nelson (Cape Town, 2020-05-17)

I’m signing because my baby was in NICU for a month during the pandemic and I was allowed one hour a day, my husband was not allowed at all. This really negatively impacted the bonding process of our family and I’m sure baby could have been discharged sooner if we were allowed to do skin-to-skin. I felt like I could not advocate for my baby because I couldn’t really be there and wanted to spend time with my baby during that hour and not talk about her health as it “wasted” bonding time with her. Looking back I wish I stood up for my baby and I. I hope by signing this petition other parents can have a different experience.Natashia Freidberg (Kempton Park, 2021-03-19)

Long term damage is being done to babies as well as mom and dad. Yes Covid is real but 15min a day is shocking and is not like Covid only jumps after 15min to its next victim. Honestly this is absurd.Marilie Parsons (Hartbeespoort, 2021-03-19)

I gave birth on the 1st of feb and was an emergency c section... was taken straight to the covid ward alone... went to theatre alone and honestly because of that I hated my birth , was alone in the covid ward after birth until 6pm that night while waiting my covid results... I only saw my baby for the first time that evening for 20 min😔During the time I was in hospital I was allowed to visit nearly every visiting hours but as soon as I was discharged I could only see my baby for 1 hour out of the say for the next 2 weeks 😔 but did not need to have any covid test taken in the time I was out of hospital to come visit??
Honestly I felt super down because I hardly had anytime with my baby and sometimes when visiting I wasn’t even able to hold her ...
I believe especially for prem babies and their moms and dads allowing more contact time is needed... yes maybe having covid tests taken every 3 days is needed to stay safe but it’s something that needs to be considered

For a month my husband was not allowed to visit our son in NICU. I was fortunate that I was allowed the whole day and that is why I feel so strong that all parents should have this right. It is rediculous to keep them away. Once they are in they in, so what does it matter for hiw long they stay?? The mom goes home to the dad, they hug and share a bed - why is he then not allowed? There is absolutely so logical reasoning behind these decisionsCarlien Faber (Centurion, 2021-03-21)

I was refused access to my baby in the NICU for 2 weeks. I was allowed 30minutes per day. No skin to skin... no breast feeding... resulting in baby recovering slower and refusing the breast after being bottle fed for 2 weeks. Parents should be allowed to stay with baby in thr NICU or visit them as frequently and unresticted as much as possible. I was denied access to the first 2 week of my child's life. Only bonding with her 30 minutes a day. It is unacceptable!!!!!!!!Anina Van der Merwe (Germiston, 2021-03-21)

I am a mom to a premature baby, these babies need all the care and love, and feeling their moms skin on theirs helps do much. It helps baby to form better attachment and strong bonds. I come from SA and moved away, as someone who had the benefit of skin to skin with my preemie, I know how vital it is for their health and continued well being. Parents should be able to visit and have contact with their preemies as long as they wish, with reasonable COVID restrictions that other countries implement. That includes overnight visits and observation nights before discharge.Jaco-Lize de Bruyn (永和區, 2021-03-21)
