Parent #173 is right on every single point. The school has effectively managed to quiet voices every single time anyone has raised an issue, and this tactic of BSM staff or their spouse mocking ‘fee-paying’ parents is disrespectful and shameful indeed. Going further, BSM will have to realise things have changed, and If they are not proactive, a lot of parents will be taking their children out for whatever options are left.

Now we must push for drop in fees. I am on 20%. Please. Our demands will be met insha'Allah. I am plead with school authoritys to also separate child's in swimming and physical activities exercise to cover shame. Teachers you should be parents to our childs. Be respectful cover up and follow demands. Please. New petition

It really does upset me to see the school that my children have grown up be brought to its knees. The fact is that the school has been financially mismanaged and money poured into the different building phases, needs to be investigated. How does it benefit the whole school to build numerous pools and a theatre to satisfy the personal interests of the principal? I think the school would have been in a better position to offer a cut in fees if it did not have all the unnecessary overheads, i.e paying for luxurious facilities. When everything around us is affected by this pandemic, why does the school think it's immune? It's high time that the principal resigns and hands over responsibility to someone with a fresh approach, because things have changed and the children deserve better.

It’s with deep regret that this school represented by it’s Board Of Governors and Principle is no longer fit for purpose. Teaching staff and/or their spouses with the temerity to question parents requests, clearly highlights the disconnect being shown. The opportunity cost of teachers own children benefiting from a free education indirectly paid for by other parents has slipped their mind. The school extinguished any discussion on a review of fees without consultation. The school is light years behind other international schools with the “education” being delivered currently, a token trial 15 days before the end of term, another highlight of incompetent management. As a parent, I’d also like to see the transparency of BSM staff involvement with the British School Salalah. With the volume of children leaving or parents utilising the spaces at other schools, I do hope the valuable teaching staff don’t look back and wonder “what if” come September. Their voices should also be heard.

The reduction in fees for Term 3 & the future Terms where virtual classes will be held and interactive sessions between teacher & students should have been initiated by the School Management itself instead of parents. Nevertheless, I hope the management will consider the parents request seriously and take the necessary steps on priority.

The current times require reconsideration for passing on the operating cost savings to parents through a reduction in fees. It is essential that the school management strives to cut costs as well where possible ( as followed by other leading institutions in Oman) to preserve interests of all stakeholders.

Management has been very poor in judging the current situation and adapting to the ever changing circumstances. Communication is poor and Principal Vacher has demonstrated reckless leadership by being utterly incoherent and inflexible. In fact, his presence has been lacking and any interaction with students/parents non-existent. The school must reconsider their financial model and communicate their intentions more effectively. If Mr. Vacher cannot do this, then someone more dynamic needs to take the helm.

Mr Vacher sir, you have handled the whole saga with little competence. The board has stepped in to salvage the remnants of the meal you have made of this. Little substance for a big man who has lost the respect of parents and his staff. The children thankfully didn't really know you. Please resign.

Glad to say I finally got to the end of the long message from the chief of the board (Dominic Myers). In summary, the school is pleading for our support and to forgive them for mismanaging their finances.

A few years ago, there was a slump in the economy and that should have been a sign for the school to act with caution. But instead, it ploughed on with its extravagant building projects. The financial model that the school employed was flawed. They wanted to increase student numbers by expanding the school. But what was the aim? The parents are not naïve and we know a substantial amount of money has been spent paying for favours in the international world of teaching, i.e. COBIS (which incidentally has Mr. Vacher sitting on its board) and the HPL initiative which made all children groan with apathy. The number of times parents had contacted the school, but were told that Mr. Vacher was out of the country was very frequent. He preferred to fly around the world business class and raise his own profile rather than spend time with BSM children.

So who is accountable for the current situation. I think we would owe too much credit to Mr. Vacher, as it should have been the board's responsibility to oversee financial performance. But unfortunately the board miscalculated or in particular Mr. Myers; a glorified fruit & veg salesman. Importing Oreo biscuits as a CEO of a food distribution company does not justify having him sit on the board for decades. Something is wrong here?

The school unable to deliver what the parents pay for. But it is ok, we have a theatre now which everyone knows why it was built.

The jump in fees from year 6 to 7 is extortionate. Under the current circumstances, is it reasonable to be asking for that. If next year is still going to be home learning, how does BSM justify not offering some kind of relief. We are so worried and I am sad that we may have to pull our daughter out of BSM away from her friends and the school she loves. The letter sent from the board was very unhelpful and spoke about why they couldn't help instead of providing solutions and a strategy. Not surprising as they have handled their budget with with incompetence at the very least and/or utmost greed . The theatre was unnecessary, when most parents were asking for a canteen! Now Mr. Vacher addresses the common folk from his empty auditorium like Shylock in his counting house presiding over his wealth.
To throw more fuel on the fire, the school is now linked with Salah and nobody has explained how our fees are being funnelled.
This has now been going on for long enough and now I hear the teachers are losing their jobs. It is time for Mr. Vacher to consider his position carefully and if not, there should be a separate petition asking for this. No confidence at all.

If BSM's books weren't apparently so suspiciously rigged, there wouldn't be a need to drop fees as requested by most. Although the school is a not-for-profit organisation, should there have been some kind of business sense operating behind the scenes? If there was, then let's have a detailed report explaining the school's business plan.

It doesn't take much digging around to find out that the board is rather dysfunctional and that is no fault of most who have served or currently serve on it. Is it normal to have a chair who holds a permanent seat? Is there an election process and if there is, do those who elect the chair do this without persuasion? With effective succession planning in place, it can be beneficial for chairs to move on after a reasonable time. This would help in our case, boards stagnating or individuals gaining too much power and influence solely through their length of service.

The end of term message from Mr. Vacher and his heads was full of accolades and read more like his personal CV. It was rather cold and did not address the parent's concerns. It is clear that he has failed in his capacity to lead the school through this crisis and has lost the trust of parents and his staff. The poor children are in the middle of this and really need a clean slate next year with a fresh start. It is unlikely that there will be any more building phases, therefore Mr. Vacher's tenure should be brought to a conclusion. We appreciate your work in promoting the school beyond Oman, but think it's time to have a team that serves the children's immediate needs (especially since things will be much more difficult now for those who remain).

The communication between the school and parents during the last 3 and half months was broken down. While we repeatedly hear that live online education is not beneficial the very same is being developed for the students of British School Salalah. Parents’ request for live sections of online education was discounted in a patronising manner as asking for “talk, talk, talk”, forgetting that many mothers were professionals/teachers before they became ‘trailing spouses’. Seems that BSM also discounted the methods of many leading independent schools.

Can someone please tell us when we were consulted about Flexy for the school in Salalah. I find it absolutely insulting that Mr. Vacher has been involved in an audio interview, but has not discussed this with us.

https://www.persyou.com/podcast/episode/4b93dc30/flexible-education-in-oman

He is introduced as the principal for British School Oman. (When did he interview for this).

He discusses how Muscat teachers will be used to deliver lessons to another school.

He talks about affordable education via Flexed, but has not even considered adjusting fees. In fact this has been rejected.

He talks about this program being rolled out to multiple sites in Oman, up in the mountain and villages??

This is getting ridiculous! This man has lost touch with reality and is spending his time and our money promoting his career and spluttering corporate jargon in interviews.

Enough is enough. How is our governing body managing this situation?

I watched the video with Mr. Vacher and his protege. It strikes me as another attempt to cast a shadow over the whole affair with 'smoke and mirrors'. Mr Vacher appeared uncertain in what he was explaining and looked towards his accomplice for reassurance, as if he was in a WWE wrestling tag team. There were lots of charts and a mention of several hundred emails. I am still unsure what the outcome for live teaching is? I believe it is going to be a mixture of different things? They discussed Flexed and this now raises more questions than were answered. Are we to take Mr. Vacher's word that both schools will be financially independent? How does that work if we are using BSM staff/resources? Towards the end they hastily and conveniently mention that they will discuss finances next time! I would like my child to go to a normal school, not one run by 'spin doctors'. I noticed that this video address was a bit overdue, because Mr. Vacher mentioned that we had finished last week, but it has been a fortnight in fact. Another example of a slow and unresponsive attitude in my opinion. I hope when we receive the much anticipated and promised financial/fees report it will be delivered by someone other than Mr. Vacher. I would really like there to be an opportunity to have a live Q A session, so we can ask the important questions, rather than be given warped responses to how Mr. Vacher thinks our questions should be answered. For example, fees going into senior school is significantly more as I have a child in year 6. How can this be justified if school remains partially closed?

This school is in dire need of change. As someone close to many teachers for many, many years, I'm appalled every time I hear about the mistreatment of staff and students in this, what was once in a Pre-Vacher reign, special community. This is a not-for-profit school, which had saved up money for years to improve the facilities and teaching for the children, but this banked money has instead been used for one man to build his empire and fill his CV, funding personal flights and events, and as a result this crisis has arisen where he has had to terminate many staff contracts - in an extremely horrible manner - and continue to raise school fees in the greatest recession that we have known. I hope he is enjoying his time with his family as he recently departed to the UK soon after warning staff that if they did the same but were not able to return in time for work, they would be fired immediately. One rule for the powerful, one for the rest that he does not care about.

I found this petition via social media. Was part of the school community a very long time ago with two children going through the system. They both have a careers now and thankful to BSM for that. Steve Howland was the principal back then and he was a giant of a man. The children came first and his staff loved him and he was awarded an MBE for a heroic act. The school was very strong and had a great reputation. I am not sure what has happened since then, but reading the petition gives us an idea. Perhaps the school needs to go back to basics with a principal who is there for the school. Good luck.

What has happened to our lovely community school? I’m so upset by all this.

We have been parents here for many years and never seen such an overwhelming collective feeling of anger and hurt. It really saddens us.

Why did the school not reduce fees just for a little while so we can help parents struggling?

We are a community school and a registered charity, we really should be helping. It’s just awful. The parents are understandably angry with the just terrible level of communication they have not received. Finding out this via the BSM Parents group where Mr Vacher makes podcasts and writes blogs for the world to see before us is simply very poor taste.

Friends of ours where on the flight where he flew business class home, whilst the absent Chair of Governors sent us a very lengthy, perhaps somewhat pleading, email that the school is financially challenged. How confusing? This seems to be conflicting and certainly made us pause for thought regarding the validity of these claims?

Then all this poorly timed obtuse self promotion, which unfortunately, has become more the status quo under Mr Vacher’s management, about how wonderful FlexEd is seems very distasteful and disrespectful to the parents and staff. This relentless focus on accolades and lack of focus on the community is becoming most tiresome and damaging.

We are a little community school in Muscat, not Google.

Let’s focus on our children, keeping our parents and staff at the school, and serving each other.

We too had heard how shockingly the staff that have been made redundant were treated and the remaining staff are to have salaries cut. Will these savings be passed onto parents? Perhaps the management will lead by example and take larger cuts then staff paid less? (Maybe even forgo flight allowances?) Who knows?

It’s all turned a little nasty and I think that is primarily down to the culture being set by Mr Vacher. Perhaps, regrettably it is time for a change at the top so we can get back to being a friendly, supportive and positive community once more?

The reputational damage to BSM, and in particular the management, is marked and will take a significant time to repair.

Such an uncomfortable and unnecessary chain of events caused seemingly by one man’s rather ruthless self ambition. It really does sadden us as we remember a very different time where this would have been dealt with with compassion and integrity, placing the children, parents and staff first.

I hope the school survives this and changes can be made to put us all back on the right track...

BSM has not handled the corona situation well at all. Many teachers have essentially taken an extra holiday while the school has been closed. As a school that prides themselves on the quality of the education they provide, the online learning that was implemented is poor quality and not at all well thought out.

The children are pretty much teaching themselves, so why are us parents still paying absurd amounts of the money to the school for a service that is not being provided; or is being provided in a much less than satisfactory manner. In addition staff and teachers are still being paid their normal salaries while many of the rest of us are trying to make ends meet with significant pay cuts and some have lost their jobs completely.

Contacted school 8 times and didn't receive a response about fees. Asked to speak to Mr Vacher but was then told he would respond accordingly. The long video that was released with his IT technician was appalling by any standard. Mr Vacher was wriggling and spluttering incoherently. He is clearly an experienced narcissistic liar and the board have been caught with their trousers down. No one is in charge at this school and that is the problem, because individuals take advantage of their positions and defraud us parents by syphoning off our fees. A theatre for his wife, business class flights, paying for awards/accreditation/inspections. Why couldn't the school help it's parents, who are struggling on reduced pay. Staff have been made redundant with more on the way, their pay docked by 5%, some may go down to just living expenses and some are without a contract. How has Mr. Vacher shared the burden? He is still on his huge salary. Absolutely sick. He should be an authentic leader and step down.

Parents Left (Muscat, 2020-07-25)

Appallingly weak management during the very time we needed strong guidance and leadership. We agree with the main thread running through these hundreds of comments. Distasteful management practice towards parents and staff in order to promote the careers of the select few managers at the top. Parents have been enormously let down. No fee reduction whilst salaries are hit. Why? It seems incompetence of financial management is to blame and that sits squarely on the shoulders of Mr Vacher and Mr Myers. Funds used to raise the profile of Mr Vacher through pointless school funded awards that do very little, if anything at all, to benefit our children but line the CVs of the Vacher minions that roll them out. Poorly considered over stretched site development plans, that it seems have run the school to close to the financial wire, rendering it unable to respond to the needs of financially strapped parents. And for what? For a multiple ‘retweet’ by the non-responsive self promoting prinicpal. Who does this benefit? Not my children. Parents not responded to after multiple emails, simply ignored. A generic, political and rather insulting misdated video message that deliberately avoids the issue of fees, sent with an incorrect date reference. Careless, unprofessional and arrogant. A complete disregard for parents and the real financial struggle they find themselves in. Staff sacked at a moments notice through a very distasteful whole school email, staff forced to stay in the country while the principal flys business class home, staff taking pay cuts and living in fear of losing their jobs at the drop of a hat. Parents silenced, governors silenced, staff silenced by various ‘contracts’. What a damaged and fearful community Mr Vacher has created and Mr Myers supports. And what of the future? Nothing shared. Schools in Dubai have released videos showing classrooms and provisions to let parents know what is happening and sent out plans to show different options. Here? A 30 second reference in a pre-recorded video. We need a live Q&A with Mr Vacher and Mr Myers with direct answers to all these questions, not the ICT technician and principal picking and choosing what they would like to respond to. Your avoidance of the issues fools no one. Management, such as this, has a shelf life. BSMs reputation with parents and prospective staff will undoubtedly have changed. Word spreads quickly in a small ‘international’ community.

During remote learning the vast majority of work sent to both my children was taken from a website called TWINKL. This inexpensive site was made free to all schools during lockdown. So why are we still requested to pay fees?
This low quality website has been a large part of my children’s education since joining BSM and is NOT part of a world class education.
For the last two years the school has become one large ‘play-school’ with the children exploring their own interests via discovery learning. When I have pressed the leadership to explain what this is and how it benefits my children the response has been to attempt bamboozle me with educational jargon. The truth is like HIgh Performance Learning it is just marketing nonsense. In the UK our children attended a well respected public school and we could see the progress our children were making and felt their education was value for money. In the years we have been at BSM we have NOT seen this in any shape or form. On the contrary we have witnessed first hand a revolving door of school managers none of whom have been able to talk in any depth about the teaching and learning within the school.
As a family we have had enough.
As my husbands salary has been cut we are left seeking better value from our children’s school.

With a little over a month to go, and after taking a large pay cut, I need to start to consider the move for my child to senior school - where the fees increase dramatically. I have waited patiently for the promised information from Mr Vacher regarding the revised fee structure for the new academic year, that was communicated in that rather awkward and bizzare video message at the end of term. So far I am unaware of the steps the school will be taking to support parents financially. Such a confused message and odd dynamic. Most queer. The lack of information on the most important issue was like adding tinder to an already well stoked fire, an unwelcome swipe, right when the parents needed it least. Very inappropriate for this climate and context. I am hopeful that come the new academic year, there will be full exposure from the management, coming out openly with their preferences.

Lots of questions and not enough answers. Why has communication with parents been so poor? Where is the chair of the board of governors and why has he been in that position for decades? Why is the principal always talking about leadership and spends most of his time on conferences? How many business class flights costs the same as a single child's fee? Why did the primary school waste so much money on 4 assistant heads who did not teach? Why is it ok to build a theatre manned by a technician from the UK and not a canteen for the children to sit down for a warm meal? Do we need 3 swimming pools? Why is the school uniform so expensive? Why are the teachers afraid to speak up? What was HPL all about and why does COBIS drive most of the decisions at the school? How much does it cost to be a member of COBIS and other organisations? When was the principal interview for BSS? How did the recent school inspection continue without sufficient classroom observations and how much did it cost? Why are class sizes so big at a leading international school? If we can't have a fee discount, why can't we view the published accounts of the school? Why doesn't anyone talk about HPL anymore? Is Discovery Learning a cover for teachers to sit back whilst the children play?

Can you imagine seeing all of these parents, some of whom desperate, begging for a fee reduction so they can give their children a decent education that parents have worked so hard to provide, and still turn a blind eye and do nothing? Incompetent, horrible, tasteless and absolutely classless with zero accountability for the disgraceful mistakes made that have led to the lack of financial security in this school and hence a hike in fees.

With reference to BSM's COVID FAQ. I hope this isn't the much anticipated fees & finance correspondence that we have been promised. A breakdown of figures is necessary for us to support why a few reduction is not viable. Q15 is particularly interesting as it states that each Governor will serve a 2 year term before replaced/re-elected. Mr Myers will have served 10 terms by this measure. How is re-election carried out? This is important to know? Perhaps the FAQ letter could have been proof-read before being sent out. Last sentence under Q15, "All board members are...." Please please please, let us be kind and considerate. We should be swinging to support the school. That warm feeling that we have inside for our beautiful school should be nurtured. Our principal (Mr Vacher) is a wise and great leader. Just give him the chance to see us through this crisis. Yes, he does have his own particular style when he engages with parents and staff. The majority of our children are unsure as to who he is, but goodness me folks, when he strikes a rhythm on his magnificent stringed instrument, all our faces are beaming with smiles. Those catchy melodic lyrics resonate the true essence of his vision. Furthermore, all of his messages have been precise and informative. We are a great community, we should embrace one another and emulate that dynamic that I witnessed between the principal and his young IT colleague. A perfect flipped example that in fact two's company and three's not a crowd if we choose to embrace it. The bigger the crowd, the stronger the community.

Or your principal's useless business class trips for his self promotional payments to international organisations which brings zero value to kids? Seriously MsJD? Do you even make any sense supporting an inefficient leader like him at this time? Even if you are trying to show your gratitude for him promoting you, when you threatened to leave, it shines really bad light on you, to come forward to serenade so much false accolades on him at this time.
Or is that you MrV trying to blow your own trumpet, hiding behind MsDellman's initials? You are neither charismatic, nor genuinely interested in the development of the school or the education of the children. All you care is your self promotion. It would be wise and decent for you to leave the school before parents storm into your office like they did few years ago when you hiked the enrolment fee overnight. Why isn't there any published accounts? Why aren't there any independent external auditors auditing the accounts, this being a non profit establishment? Why isn't there any internal auditor who directly reports to the board, like all other decent establishments? Why are the accounts shrouded in mystery? What is the procedure for awarding the tenders? What is the principal's/ chairman's conflict of interest in all these fancy construction projects? Why is the principal obsessed with construction after construction, even with bank loans? Why are the governors so powerless? What is the use of having all those governors if they do nothing to question the senior managment, aka principal? What do the governors actually do? What are their responsibilities? Why don't the governors examine year end accounts? If no one examines the accounts and the accounts are invisible to all the stakeholders, how does anyone know there is no serious fraud or mismanagement going on at BSM? Why is one person allowed to terrorise the staff while he wastes the students' fee on his whims and fancies? Where is the accountability of the principal? Who does he report to? Why don't the parents have any visibility to the accounts as they are the sole contributors to this so called non-profit entity? How does a non-profit operate without any accountability and zero transparency to it's finances? How come such a long established institution with a hefty school fee and a huge enrolment fee have no emergency fund, nor adequate operating cashflow, and top it off with bank loans? Who ate up all the money? Why wouldn't the Board and Principal reveal the accounts, if they have nothing to hide? Seriously who has been eating up all the money so far? Any parent who has the slightest concern for the future of the school and students needs to ask all these questions. Everything about how BSM is managed has all the redflags and more. If unattended, it will go down in the history as a prestigious institution brought down by corrupt few individuals who were not held accountable by anyone and went scot free after eating it up completely.

Parent with concerns (Muscat, 2020-07-30)

As a not-for-profit the school is primarily accountable and responsible to its stakeholders, the parents. Accountability involves being answerable to parents enquiries regarding the distribution of funds, organisational change, health safety and wellbeing of our children and the teachers who's salaries we pay.

Where is the school's annual report that outlines the distribution of funds? The tender process and policy for awarding construction projects? Where is the covid-19 health and safety management plan that not only goes above and beyond government recommendations but reflects the level of health and safety that one would expect for the amount of money we pay? Not a self declaration that removes all liability from the school? Where is the organisational change management plan outlining various return to school scenarios with a breakdown of fee allocation in the absence of a fee reduction?

BSM has opened itself up to unnecessary and significant risk at the hands of its leader through poor use of resources in terms of people and money, loss of confidence by their stakeholders and most seriously potentially loss of reputation.

The ever growing lack of confidence in leadership and the board, leads me and dare I say the growing discontent of the collective voice to call for the resignation of the board and leadership or a formal enquiry from the Ministry of Education due to the demonstrated lack of governance and stakeholder concern over the potential misappropriation of funds.

Since becoming Principal of BSM, Kai Vacher has applied for the position of principal of at least two other international British schools; both establishments sensibly turned him down which is why we have been stuck with him for so long. This is how much loyalty Mr Vacher feels towards our school; he would jump ship at the first opportunity that arises.

Since becoming principal, Mr Vacher and his cohorts have mercilessly bullied numerous staff into leaving and inflicted his stubborn opinions on the school. Thanks to him our children have lost many decent teachers over the years who were hounded out of the school because they had a bit of backbone. By contrast those inadequate teachers who sucked up to the principal, or were married to him, were promoted when promotion was definitely not merited. Our children have suffered with less than good teachers in too many cases, particularly in senior school due to the poor attitude of the SLT.

Mrs Megnin may be kind and empathetic but sadly she is an ineffectual leader who jumps to Mr Vacher's tune. No issue raised by a parent with senior school children is ever satisfactorily resolved. We have been endlessly fobbed off with rubbish about results being good while the likes of cunning Mr Baldwin, the most complained about teacher in BSM gets away year after year with being lazy and setting an appalling example to his students.

The senior school remote learning provision between March and June was a tragic joke. Mr Vacher's video with Mr Johnson didn't inspire confidence that there is any intention to greatly improve this provision next term and certainly not to the standard of top fee paying schools in the UK.

So we parents face the choice of put up or ship out.

Arrogant Kai Vacher is bringing our school to its knees. While the school cannot afford to keep staff he spent in the region of 2.500 OMR to buy two business class one way tickets on an overpriced repatriation flight for himself and his wife. Most leaders might have felt it more appropriate to exercise economy, lead by example and stick around to show solidarity towards the staff who didn't dare fly for fear of losing their jobs.

In his recent interview extolling the virtues of FlexEd at BSS Mr Vacher referred to BSM as 'my school'. Really!? I have never heard so much self serving arrogant rubbish in my life.

So it looks as though our time in Muscat may be cut shorter than we had planned for one reason and one reason only. We do not want to give another penny of our hard earned money to a school in which we have totally lost faith that it can teach our children effectively.

Having read the comments made by the BSM parents I feel duty bound to affirm your suspicions.
Mr Vacher runs the school solely for his own enterprise.
The annual misappropriation of funds staggered me.
The only way forward for the school is to remove him and the chair of governors who is complicit in having turned the school into their own vanity project, seeking the affirmation of others online rather than the families of the few paying parents it was designed to serve.
A new and experienced principal would then be able to assess the remaining leadership team (and teaching staff) to separate the talentless sycophants from the truly dedicated and professional staff that do abound within the school.
I sincerely hope the families of BSM are able to use this opportunity to reclaim their lost school.
An outcome of this being a more properly ran school would be able to streamline its resources and thus be able to reduce the fees to ensure you the families are still able to send your children to school there.

As a former student I feel as though it is my responsibility to shed light on what really goes on in BSM. I won’t be mentioning Kai Vacher as much. As in the eyes of the students he’s a elusive beast that descends from his thrown once every millennium to wipe the backside of a famous visitor or to play his guitar at the Stars in Their Eyes event which he plays for way too long. I was at the school for a year before I had any idea who he was. As we all know school is meant to “prepare“ you for the real world and is a place where talents are nurtured and students are encouraged to reach their fullest potential. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Firstly I would like to address the teaching quality/attitude. The vast majority of teachers have a floppy attitude to teaching. They DO NOT care about the welfare of their students. Many see this as a holiday, they are given accommodation and a whole country to explore. BSM is just another school on their CV. For example during my First year of A-levels our maths time table was completely screwed up but the head of department (who has no ability to teach). This meant students not learning the syllabus and as a result having to teach themselves the content a month before the exam. This also carried over to the next year. Students are not encouraged to strive for higher grades but are praised if they just about pass the test. A lot of the teaching styles are out dated with teachers using the same power points that have been used for years and haven’t actually been created by themselves. They have just plucked any old power points from the internet and just simply regurgitate the text on the board with not further explanation. Many teachers do not properly understand the content they are teaching and yet they expect us pick it up with relative ease. When a question is asked these teachers routinely reply with the same answer “Let me go and check for you”. They will go to the one good teacher in the department and have them explain it to the class. I have been myself in a class where a teacher walked out 6 times in a 45 min lesson to ask another teacher for help. I have also been in the other side where our lesson is interrupted because a teacher didn’t know what they were supposed to be teaching. The ones that connect on a level with the students and make them want to strive for the best are unfortunately let go. Some how they just leave out if no where, get fired or disappear in the case of Mr. Dunn (a wonderful man who left after a year) These teachers understand how to communicate with their students, and show real passion when teaching and touch the child’s heart. On the subject of touching, did you know that BSM has a special register for naughty teachers who like to touch kids in other places than their hearts. So parents before you send your kids to BSM do you really want them to be in a place where such people are even acknowledged to exist and nothing is done about it. Why do you think Shubert was “fired”? When in actually fact he was asked to leave after a few years. Even though many complaints were made against him, he was still kept as a teacher because he bought publicity and “value” to the school through his bike riding. His was never fired as a result of his actions but with a cover up excuse that he wanted to explore the world or some rubbish like that. He was my biology teacher and used to eat Bananas during his lessons in an unconventional way, you can connect the dots and see how that’s extremely inappropriate. There are afew others on that register and some are even worse.
To the parents, many of you are professionals hence why you are here in Oman. I just expect that you would want your children to receive the best education possible and go on top universities. May of my friends were some of the cleverest and hard working students you could ever find. Most of my friend applied to Universities such as Stanford, MIT, Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial. None were given the support they deserved. The careers folk are useless at helping you apply. They pay for tickets for some fancy universities to come and speak to us and that’s as far as it goes. I believe my friends were robbed of this opportunity to study in such prestigious institutes. As you may known applying to the US is extremely difficult and no support or guidance was given. Would you seriously allow you child to be in a situation where they are not supported by the school probably because Vacher or his son couldn’t get there himself so he would forsake everyone else’s opportunity. Teachers like Mr. Twigger and Mr. Al-Faroq set up after school sessions to specifically help students in these situations but were shut down may times. BSM is a merry-go-round of nonsense. Us students are being robbed of a good education, this is OUR future that we are preparing for with a bunch of lazy half-whits. We are not abit of “experience” for under qualified staff, and an experiment for Vachers new construction business (which 90% of us will never use). Give us our future. I can’t even imagine what the current students are going though with the online lesson halabalava. There are exceptions to this, however may of the teachers that adhered the this exception have been fired, have left or have just “disappeared”. The likes of Mr. Twigger, Mr Dunn ,Mr Al-faroq, Mr Maie and a hang full more. These teachers CARRIED the rest of the school. BSM is a self serving self proclaimed shell company and is most definitely used for money laundering. With fees in the same ball park as Eton and Harrow we WANT what we pay for. Unfortunately the younger students won’t see any of this as a problem as many have been sheltered their entire lives, and let’s face it no kid really wants to learn. It’s until you leave you realise the treachery. If you are a teacher and you are offended by this, it is because YOU are the problem. Please take your job seriously. Parents, your better of sending your kids to ABA.

For too long leadership at BSM has been poor. Yet external inspectors gave them a glowing report. Good teachers have been forced out or left on their own accord because of the incredible injustices present at the school. Bad teachers have remained, parents and students complain and complain about certain individuals and nothing happens. Some of these bad teachers end up promoted, or certainly hold positions of head of department or head of year/key stage and even head of senior. For too long the muscat community knew and did nothing. We knew and because it didn't affect us as such, let it be. Now that same leadership we are experiencing. Those ex employees that fought got nowhere. And now it's our turn to fight for what's right. The governors, the leaders have never been made accountable for anything. They operate autonomously and I believe the Ministry of Education has no say on what happens at BSM.

In recent times we have seen teachers pipe up and speak out against leaders on different forums. We then had students voice their concerns on the BSM reddit page (go find it and see!). Students views are well represented there. And now we have this petition and parents expressing their views.

To date, nothings happened. No action taken. No accountability for leaders. And as many signatures as we may get, we will ultimately get nowhere like the teachers tried before us and like the students tried before us.

The reality is the school will reopen and the school will continue with its PR and podcasts and blogs. It'll continue to fake it and paper over the cracks. Many of us will continue to send our children there out of convenience, out of routine. And they will get away with this. This wouldn't stand in the UK but abroad they're protected. It's the sad reality of what happens when people in power abuse their power.

I find all of this extremely greedy and unfair, my parents think likewise. For several reasons, as a student, I've been appalled by the way they have handled the C-19 situation. BSM promote themselves as the best school in the UK, yet the fees are so pricey, and basically what your money goes to is technically a scam.
As mentioned, I have received pre-recorded, outdated videos on lessons. Most of the teachers have been useless during this period of time.

Damage has been done and we need to move on to save the school. The main stakeholders can work together to ensure the children receive an excellent education. Perhaps the chair of governors and principal should take a break. We need an emergency response team to assume control and draw up immediate and explicit plans to keep BSM operational and all concerned informed with transparency at its core. There is a wealth of expertise in Muscat and most of us parents work in organisations that deal with crucial decisions. The teachers should be consulted and taken seriously. The school should not be too proud to ask for help. Thank you.

I am writing this as a thoroughly disappointed parent . BSM is no longer a school , we are no longer a community held together by the spirit of education. We are now brought together by the fact we are being scammed out of our hard earned money so that teachers can sit back and relax, while our children learn nothing . At this point letting them watch YouTube all day would be more educative . The absurd fees are uncalled for , insulting and borderline illegal , Omani education board should do something about schools like BSM taking full fees while providing 1/10 education. I along with many other parents are seriously considering pulled our children out of bsm and into a more reasonable school . I hope the management can see this and reflect! We will not be silenced!!!

Where was Jenny Dellman and Kai Vacher at last years Christmas concert? In Sallalah that’s where. At a time they both should have been at the center of the celebrations greeting families and applauding the children they had scheduled a trip together to British School Sallalah. Why? Because simply they are not comfortable around the children or parents that make up the school and so choose to absolve themselves of this most crucial aspect of their responsibility. This very disconnect is evident in their appalling handling of this current crisis. These type of people have no place working in any school let alone one that has the potential of BSM.
Since Mr Vacher likes hashtags so much here are some for him #resign #timeforchange #noconfidence #Withholdfees #stayinUK #dontcomeback

@278 where is the BSM Concern page/ group on Facebook? If it’s a group, you must have made it a private group which cannot be found by anyone by searching for it. Rather make it a closed group in the settings so the content is not public but people can find it by searching on the Facebook. If it’s a page, you need to publish it so others can see. BSM parents group shuts down anyone who wants to give any kind of criticism and they remove posts which raise concern. So it is a good initiative you have started a group to discuss the concerns but please make it visible so others can join as well and hopefully we can do something collectively for the betterment of the school. It is run as a dictatorship right now and teachers and parents are shit scared to open their mouth. Such a shame.

With reference to post 287. Isn't it true that Mr Vacher & Ms Dellman would regularly travel to Salalah together during school time and overnight? Numerous flights to attend 'meetings'. To what end? What a pile of shite this petition site has become. Set up with good intentions, but now littered with derogatory comments by anonymous disgruntled individuals. Yeah, things are not perfect and there's much work to be done, but come on!!! What's going on when we have individuals attacked and belittled in front of an audience with the intention of causing humiliation? Now it seems we have more people who want a piece of the action with the BSM concerns page thrown into the mix. Those who say that the school's reputation has been tainted are the very people who are contributing to it... The irony! This is a global situation and many private schools are facing similar situations with even closure. The same with other businesses across the world. No doubt the next post will be another disgruntled person with nothing positive to share....

Much work to be done? Mr Vacher has been Principal for 10 years!
During remote learning we gained insight into standard of teaching. Most of which was internet downloaded resources simply read to our children. There was a few exceptions where the teaching was world class. But why was this not across the board? Sadly it seemed that the teachers who have been at the school the longest are the weakest. If mr Vacher is such a great leader how is it that these teachers are not capable of more than simply googling and downloading a PowerPoint and it’s associated worksheet then reading it our children.
I have to add that this learning is not limited to remote learning. A look in my children’s books reveals that this is standard practice. This is NOT good enough for the huge fees we pay. Mr Vacher has been in charge of the school for easily long enough to have addressed this substandard teaching.
I think it is fair to ask to reduce fees not just in remote leaning but in normal teaching time.
Or to bring in a new school leader who is motivated to improve teaching rather than the current leader who it seems is only interested in improving his own image.

@303 Much work to be done? (Muscat, 2020-08-04)

Although no longer now at the school (my husband has lost his job like so many) I am pleased this petition has been started.
It does seem to have degenerated and turned into a witch hunt against management though.
Saying that, there appears to be enough weight behind the argument of removing the School Principal and having a change of Chairman. Is it correct? 20 years he has been in that position? Don’t dictators and Russian Presidents do that kind of thing?
I have to agree with comments about travel. All the trips overseas the Principal made (Business Class?) over the time we were there did not help in any way shape or form our childrens’ education. It does seem to suggest the feathering of a nest.
I was also shocked to read that the Principal had been for two job interviews in his time at BSM. That doesn’t seem to demonstrate loyalty and could explain all these trips overseas to get his face known?
These trips to the school down south by the Principal, Head of Primary and the IT Technician; are parents school fees funding them it has to asked?
If the Principal wants to travel Business Class during holidays then that’s his decision, but I do agree that it can be seen as being somewhat insensitive to parents who have last their jobs and are struggling with school payments.
My children did well at BSM and they loved most of their teachers but I did hear that those who were recently made redundant were done so via email. That’s terrible. One, a friend of ours, had been at BSM for 15 years. She was heartbroken at her treatment. Another were a couple who had just recently had a baby. They all found out via email that they were no longer employed.
Perhaps if BSM considered not paying for the Principal’s lease on his Land Cruiser they could have kept one teacher.
Things do need to be considered for the future of BSM, including the management.

We are safely back in Ireland now and we shall miss the warmth of our friends and the country that was our home for many years. But if only half of what has been mentioned on this site is true, it’s going to be a cold bleak time for many at BSM at the start of the new school year.

#304, the witch hunt is somewhat necessary. For once the light is on management. And to be honest some of the complaints regarding poor teaching falls on the head of senior also, the head of key stages also. Its well known about Baldwin, kolster and others and yet nothings done. Many teachers who have been at the school for years (20+ years) don't even have degrees or teaching certificates.

The leaders perform witch hunts on staff, get rid with little reason and have acted unprofessionally for many years. Now, finally, everyone can see who the management are. But truthfully, the principal has been absent most of the time building his CV. And in his place were left incompetent primary and secondary leads to run the school. They were bullies, operated on favouritism and not on merit and professionalism.

Its a shame their names are not dragged through the dirt and sadly just the principal and chairman become the fall guys. There's been issues for years and if staff could vote who to get rid of, they'd vote head of key stages and certain heads of department and head of senior/primary. If parents could vote they'd vote principals and governors.

At least the corruption is known now. And the wider community are aware too. But sad that nothing will happen. Ultimately they win. Even if now they walk away from the school, God knows how much money they made from their time at the school for so little work.

Calls for a total revamp, calls for incompetent leads to step down and walk away. Head of geography, head of maths, head of key stage 3, head of senior, and many more.

Well I don't miss the busy drop offs and pick ups, but keen to get back to school. Having read most the comments on here, the school should reflect on much of the issues raised. It has taken this crisis to reveal that BSM is quite dysfunctional in some ways. Much of it is down to leadership from the top, because that is where the school ethos/culture comes from. The teachers will replicate the behaviour of its management and our children will follow the examples set. Mr Vacher clearly needs support in his role and wonder if he is listening, because the school must adapt to the unfolding situation. A positive culture can only come from change and yes I agree... It is time for a change at the top for the sake of our children and the reputation of the school which is taking a hammering within the community. Parents should not feel helpless and from the sounds of it, teachers too. So much is at stake here, our children's education and state of mind.

Emperor Vacher, the Chancellor of the British School 'Oman' cast a warning down onto his 'greatful' staff that if they were not to return on the first day of school (which is one week before the children start), then there would be contractual implications. What this meant was fairly obvious, because management wanted to leave it up to the imagination of its staff the consequences of a 'no-show'. You see with the closure of the airport and limited repatriation flights, returning to Oman was a gamble and the school knew it to be. How else would you guarantee staff remain in country, without intimidation and rumouring termination of contracts as a likely repercussion? Don't forget redundancies followed soon after... Some members of staff were desperate to return home and see family/loved ones. For others it was too late, because the school had forsaken its people. Some people say that the principal is unaware of his brash persona and unable to forge positive relationships. If the latter is true, then being a school leader looking after the wellbeing of children is probably not likeliest vocation to devote oneself to. Now karma rears her beautiful head and the principal is unable to return back in country in time for the start of the academic year. What should the repercussions for him be? Perhaps we should all support him and teach him how to treat his fellow human beings through kindness and understanding? Hard for some, but the true staff at BSM are much better than him.

Soon to be homeless (Muscat, 2020-08-11)

It should be highlighted that Mr Vacher will have to adhere to the 2 week quarantine law. Any deviation from this in particular regarding contact with a member of staff would potentially impact on the rest of the staff, the children they teach and the parents of those children.
I am shocked that the leader of the school chose to return to UK himself after threatening his staff in the way described. Why did the school simply not charter it’s own plane for all the staff? Surely this would have been the most obvious thing to do. I believe other schools in the region offered this. That BSM did not and the principal chose to leave himself says a lot about his core values. I don’t think such values have place in any school let alone at the very top. Very disappointing.

Still loads of issues need fixing that have been mentioned on here. Principal Vacher has been very poor in his delivery and communication. Another principal Inna nearby International school is calling parents face to face but Mr. Vacher has been hiding. He needs to be accountable for his actions and behaviour and his mismanagement of fees for his own gains. He wasn't even present on a level results day. Challenging students by mock exams, while they are still part-way through the syllabus, and department heads deliberately set tougher grading systems than the ones used by the exam boards in the summer.

He then threatened his whole staff with serious contractual obligations if they left for summer before leaving himself then docking himself 2 days wages after HE failed to return.
