The Prime Minister just announced the day before yesterday that the priority for the next three months will be public safety. New Zealand is not the United States; not only are there differences in the system, but it is also a country with a much smaller economic scale. It cannot afford the cost of public safety chaos, otherwise, it will go down the path of becoming like Mexico, which would severely affect its international reputation and impact exports (goods, tourism, education). The police are too slow in investigating cases, and the bus company has not made a statement (they hire a bunch of Pakistanis and Indians who prefer not to make trouble, as the whole village is depending on them), and it is expected that the court’s judgment will be too lenient.
The family seems to be good people; their mother’s eyes were red from crying.
If the government does not handle this matter well, it is inevitable that a search for New Zealand on major platforms in mainland China will bring up this news, and it could easily be labeled as a place with ‘not very good public safety.’ For every international student that stays away, the country loses at least $90,000 in foreign exchange a year. Scaring away 1,000 international students amounts to more than $90 million, which is more than the current annual revenue of $80 million from the international tourist fee of $35.
Currently, the international price for a ton of milk powder is about $2,500 (USD). $90 million is equivalent to 59,000 tons of milk powder. The government is demanded to arrest the 200-pound suspect without bail.
