I belong to the INSTAP Center for East Crete and wish to support my colleagues in Greek archaeology. I also belong to the American School of Classical Studies at Athens and support and attend lectures at all the foreign schools in Athens. It would be a terrible shame for the Norwegian colleagues to have to give up their part in the exchange of information with each other and with our Greek hosts.

Athens is still important for all who want to study classical archaeology and cultural history in Greece. It has a strategic position and offers its students an unique opportunity to be right in the middle of "where it all happened". The Norwegian institute at Athens is not as big or prestigeous as the one in Rome, but equally important!

The NiA has a long history and a vitally important present role in facilitating Norway's participation in the worldwide study of ancient and modern Greek history and culture. The Institute is a fundamental link between northern and southern Europe. A broader collaborative model should be developed to preserve this valuable institution.

The NIA is the reason that I have been able to conduct field work and research in Greece. The NIA has supported the Norwegian Archaeological Survey of the Karystia and Gourimadi Archaeological Project that I am lucky to be a part of and has twice has directly supported my travel and research. Beyond all of its other undertakings (of which there are MANY), the NIA has made training in archaeological field methods accessible to students across the globe. Closing the NIA would be a devastating loss to the archaeological and academic communities.

i spent invaluable at NIA for research - it’s importance to norwegian students as an accessible hub puts them on a much more competitive footing with US students and researchers whose AM academy is markedly more selective.

The Norwegian Institute at Athens has a long and distinguished presence in Greece. Its tradition of excavation, research, and educational services have always been an essential and healthy part of the international archaeological community in Greece. My Norwegian colleagues in Athens make many important contributions to the continuing exploration of Mediterranean culture. They have always been generous and dynamic members of the archaeological community. To lose the Norwegian Institute and our colleagues would be a very great blow to all of us, and to the ongoing training of future archaeologists. Please consider alternate forms of support for this important research Institute and please, please let it continue to make important contributions to research, excavation, and teaching in Greece.

We have seen historically the imagistic importance of historical patrimony and watched while some archaeologists in the Near East died to save their collections. How can I not sign a petition in support of an institute that has made so many important contributions to the international effort to create and preserve knowledge of our common past.

Norska instituet är en kritisk och framgångsrik del av den internationella samverkan. Därtill kommer norge likväl behöva behålla institutet på ett eller annat sätt eftersom det enligt grekisk lag måste ta hand om tidigare utgrävningar.

At this particular moment of spreading "nationalisms", our cultural research institutes abroad are more important than ever. The Norwegian Institute contributes significantly to a range of cultural exchanges. I am most familiar with the archaeological research--and know that the many students of multiple nationalities who have worked with Norwegian-sponsored field projects in recent years have gained enormously from the experience of meeting and working with researchers trained in different traditions and styles. Most of the Americans on those projects met Norwegians for the first time in that context and came away with a new appreciation for that country and its people. It would be a sad and grievous loss were the Norwegian Institute to fold.

The Norwegian Institute at Athens has already major accomplishments in its history! Its contributions are not only to the archaeology of Greece but also to the humanities at large. The Norwegian Institute, as other foreign institutes or schools in Greece, provides students and scholars from Norway a singular opportunity to explore the antiquities of Greece. With studies now focusing on Naxos and Arcadia, the Institute adds to its resume of good work done in important sites like Petropigi and underwater (off Ithaka). What such institutes offer, especially to students, are unique and valuable experiences, studying ancient Greece but also coming to know modern Greece and its people. Shutting down the institute or impoverishing it will only harm them.

Athens, Rome and the Byzantine world make up a fundamental part of the Norwegian heritage. Instead of closing down Norwegian core accademic and cultural institutions abroad the financing bodies should rather work to open new core institutions in the Mediterranean world. That some one wants to close down the Norwegian institute at Athens demonstrates well that too few Norwegians know the importance of this part of the world in forming the European culture we all are part of.

It is important to continue the valuable work of the Norwegian Institute at Athens in investigating, researching, and publishing about the ancient Mediterranean world that offers so many insights to our contemporary problems. The Norwegian Institute has been doing important work, work that is particularly relevant to and will continue today, at a time when fewer and fewer people know anything about history--to say nothing about thinking analytically about history and culture(s) and seeking effective, alternative, and humane ways to deal with the crises that plague the world we live in and treat so cavalierly.

As the retired Director of the Canadian Institute in Greece, one of the 18 other foreign archaeological schools/institutes in Greece recognized by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sport, I support this petition requesting that responsible authorities in Norway continue the financial and moral support of this important member of the Greek archaeological community, In a period of nationalist retrenchment what is needed in Europe as a whole are more organizations like the Norwegian Institute in Athens that actively and effectively promote inter-country research and understanding. For such a wealthy country it would be a mark of shame on Norway to close this successful and influential Institute in Greece.

I am a Professor of ancient Greek history in the United States. I have spent several years doing research in Athens and can attest to the tremendous value of the network of international schools in this complex and fascinating city. The continued existence of the Norwegian Institute will be critical to supporting the interests of Norwegian scholars of Classical antiquity. Without a home base like this in Athens, it will be very difficult for them to reside in Athens to conduct their research and to profit intellectually and professionally from the incredible network of international scholars working in the city. Insofar as Greece sits at the very origin of western political discourse, democratic institutions, poetic and artistic traditions, it would be tragic for the Norwegian universities and state to constrain the ability of its students, teachers, and citizens to engage with the Greek past in such a serious way.

I exhort you to channel just a bit of Norway's astonishing wealth to this truly important cultural and educational cause.
