Marriage and Family Therapist and Mental Health Counselors are trained to provide exceptional help to individuals, couples, and families in need. They have earned the right to help others and should be allowed to do so without barriers.Kataura Washington-Simon (East Elmhurst, 2021-02-09)

I am signing this because I feel as a student who is about to graduate this is unfair to the amount of work and money we have put in in ordewr to graduate. We took classes on diagnosing patients. We did our internships and were in the field. If we aren't able to diagnose patients then social workers shouldn't be able to either. We have more training on the mental health side of the field than social workers do. Also, we are the ones that clients talk to since psychiatrists are only really prescribe the medications. We put the referrals in to the psychiatrists. This would be unfair and wrong to take this part of the job away from us.Kristen Nevins-Murphy (Ossining, 2021-02-09)

Should this newly licensed Article 163 pass the mental health community will lose valuable, equally trained, experienced professionals to assist in our country's current pandemic. Two of my three children will suffer greatly as they are receiving incredibly valuable services in the community.
Why must mental health suffer until it's too late?

As a future clinician, I have been privileged to participate in both an academic and applied experiences that have solidified my competencies in both diagnosis and treatment of individuals with wide spectrum of mental health issues. I firmly believe that Mental Health Counseling as a field and profession is centered around this major tenet, and is both necessary and deservedMatthew Gallo (West Harrison, 2021-02-16)

I am signing this document because I am a mental health counselor and this is an injustice. In order to be licensed we have to take a test the solely examines diagnostics. This is an oxymoron. Please think critically about taking away a huge service to this community.Nathaniel Terpening (West Shokan, 2021-02-16)

I am an LMHC in NY and feel strongly that my education and experience gives me full autonomy and authority to make diagnostic decisions for the clients I work with. Following diagnosis, to treatment planning, to doing the therapeutic work is the gold standard of this profession, especially in community settings. Removing the ability for us qualified mental health providers to diagnose and effectively treat our clients, is reckless to clients, to the greater public, and to our fellow mental health professionals, especially during this time when mental illness is on the rise. Please consider the consequences of following through with this legislation.Amanda Thomas (Syracuse, 2021-02-16)

I work in a Children’s mental health agency with many MHC’s as well as MHC interns. Our agency will no longer be able to hire MHC’s or accommodate MHC interns which is a loss as they are skilled clinicians who diagnose appropriately.Sandy Essington (Poughkeepsie, 2021-02-16)

I work in the substance abuse field and my LMFT and LMHC colleagues, who have worked so hard for their degrees, and are so critical to care we provide are client, need to be able to diagnose clients so that we can continue to provide services to the underserved populations as they will be most affected by the passage of this law. Medicaid has strict billing requirements and LMHC and LMFTs need to be able to meet that criteria in order to serve our clients. Passing this Bill will only hurt already vulnerable populations.Jessica Alvarado (Bellport, 2021-02-16)

Licensed mental health practitioners are needed to more effectively address the mental health crisis in New York, which has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. All licensed professionals, including LMHCs and LMFTs are needed to effectively address the crisis. LMHCs and LMFTs are eminently qualified, along with LCSWs, to fully serve individuals and should be allowed to do so without restrictions.Lynn Goldberg (Niskayuna, 2021-02-17)

*I believe that this is a disservice to the field as a whole and those that we serve. Their can be dire consequences that will affect many aspects of this care as we know it.RICHARD MONTALBANO (BRENTWOOD, 2021-02-17)

I know that these individuals have more than sufficient education and experience to provide appropriate diagnosis to clients. there are too many barriers to mental health care and licensure hoops to jump through cause get harm , less providers and ultimately less help for those who need it. Mental health professionals are forced to battle a turf war with social workers and psychologists. there is such a great need out there for people that respond to all types of provides for help. There is enough work to go around for all of us. I am a mental health counselor, unable to get licensed because I am competing with too many people in finding an agency that has supervision. In western ny ,social workers seem to have an edge because of the word 'diagnosis' in their credentials. I am a school counselor and now in retirement, a mental heath counselor. 30 years !!1with more experience than many and yet it is impossible to find a job to build my hours for licensure. We need to be able to add the word diagnose in our credential so we can compete with our colleagues the social workers .We both have something valuable to offer. Ultimately, people go without treatment because providers are competing for insurance panels.. There is enough work for all of us!!!!!!Jan Ables (Buffalo, 2021-02-26)

I am an LMHC in need of the ability to diagnose, as well as assess and treat, child and families and provide mental and behavioral services that many families need. The ability to diagnose is essential in providing best practice care for families due to Covid, the opioid epidemic, the increase of children in foster care due to the opioid crisis and other factors, and trauma stemming from these continued environmental stressors.Amy Favro (vermontville, 2021-03-05)

As a mental health counselor, it is imperative that the laws are in place to allow myself and my colleagues to continue to provide the best level of care to our patients. We demand this new law - Article 163 is reversed to prevent an entire field of qualified clinicians from being able to diagnose and attest our patient's medical necessity to medicaid services.Christina Covington (New York, 2021-03-08)

I’m signing because as a practicing MHC I find this invaluable to being an effective mental health provider. By limiting our scope of practice would do more harm than good to our communities, clients and would exasperate the work our fellow colleagues would do. We want to work as a team for the common good of our clients.Daniella Molina (Ossining, 2021-03-25)

With mental health concerns increasing, the ability to diagnose and not interrupt the clinical/therapeutic process is essential to the clients that we serve. Not being able to diagnose would cause negative waves in the field and would cause less access for clients to seek the help that they need.Michael Dygert (Delmar, 2021-03-26)
