I pass this place all the time. I find NOTHING offensive about the signage or menu display. The staff I have encountered are nothing but polite and friendly. This does appear to be a totally personal vendetta. Note that none of the other restaurants are being told to amend or change. Good luck Pomegranate, I can only hope common sense will prevail.

I have no idea why this restaurant has received so much hassle for it's signage but I can have a good guess. All people should be judged on their actions not their ethnic origin.

Unbelievable. Have always found the front of the restaurant more than acceptable and to think that this could be a deciding factor to closing what is a fabby restaurant with great food, great staff and lovely atmosphere and certainly one of my favourite places to eat when I am in Edinburgh. Leave them alone to get on with what they do best.

Another example of how the Council approve ridiculous complaints... support small business, support culture, support local diversity, don't stifle it!

Pomegranate is the best!

I think this is stupid the building has never looked cleaner or better kept than it does now and is no worse to the eye than any other close by restaurants. People should be happy that that the current openers seem to take care of their property!

So Guiliano's a few doors up has green lights illuminating its shop-front and the whole street, that's fine. Brightly coloured Taste of Italy across the road is fine. Deep Sea which is right beside Pomegranate is lit with tacky neon lights, it's fine. Planet Out across the road is bright and loud, that's fine. But a restaurant with none of the above is being asked to change their appearance? Such BS I've not heard (and certinaly not seen) in a long time. More power to you Pomegranate, this petition clearly demonstrates how REAL people feel about this.

I feel shame that you are being badgered in this way. Take it to appeal, previous establishment showing you are being hated on.

Sorry to hear that this lovely restaurant might be forced to shut. I have always found the signage for Pomegranate nice to look at and don't understand why anyone would have a difficulty with it.
Hope the decision is reversed and Pomegranate can continue to function as usual!

A beautiful restaurant that's signage is entirely in keeping with similar businesses in the area. The complaints against them have the feeling of racism - please don't penalise the business for the nastiness of a small number of people.

its a disgrace that someone would do this, i can see nothing offensive at all, its just someones idiotic behaviour doing this and the council is obviously in her pocket

I hope this petition succeeds. I am very much against petty-mindedness

Absolutely disgraceful - the Council needs to reconsider urgently or supply us with a full report on why (when the signage and lighting was in a worse state with the previous restaurant) they believe they can support what is clearly a campaign by a small-minded individual. A similar thing happened to friends in London and they stood up to be counted and won - the individual involved there ended up being warned against further harrassment. Come on Edinburgh - we are supposed to be a welcoming city!

Don't understand the complaint at all; the area is full of bars and restaurants with lit signage. Why single out Pomegranate? Absurd.

Here's the planning application:

https://citydev-portal.edinburgh.gov.uk/idoxpa-web/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=documents&keyVal=MP9IK6EWLO000

It appears they didn't realise that permission was required for change of signage and the retrospective application has been refused because

"the alterations have a severe adverse impact on the special character of the listed building"

"having an adverse impact on the character and appearance of the conservation area"

Which makes absolutely no sense the rest of the building and area is commercial units whose signage generally has less in keeping with the architectural character of the buildings!

My friends and I spent a great evening in this lovely restaurant. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I can't understand why anyone would complain about the Pomegranate's signage as there are a number of restaurants in the vacinity whose signage are even more colourful.

Photos of the previous restaurant

and now

The differences appear to be in the details such as strip lighting above the signs and replacing the fan-shaped glass over the door with an illuminated sign.
