Read Island has been over exploited by industrial scale logging and the Residents need some protection going forward.(Surge Narrows, 2017-12-01)

This is so important to the community ....please listen to their advise and support the life that resides in the wetlands ...and the beauty this small piece of heaven gives to all who visit. !!(Mansons Landing British Columbia, 2017-12-01)

I believe that old growth forests, wetlands, and streams and riparian areas provide essential habitat for rare and endangered species, and important hydrologic\climatic\bio-physical stability to their surrounding ecosystems. There are many species that require old forests for their habitat to exist. A wetland the size of the one in question regulates water throughout many hectares of land and ecosystems, and provides unique habitat opportunity. Streams and riparian areas act as corridors for wildlife and provide essential water and food for them. These ecosystems are recognized in various levels and departments of Provincial and Federal Government as being important; because they exist on private forestry land does not make them un-important,(Campbell River, 2017-12-01)

I’m from Read island and hear are my roads. I’ve been walking them my whole life. This is my neighbourhood. It’s a very densely populated area that is planned to be clearcut right out to the road. Can you imagine clearcuts beside the road everywhere you go around your community? We don’t want that!(Read island, BC, 2017-12-01)
#9
I live here and I care!! I've seen the roadsides in my community go from pristine mature forest to clearcut in a very short time. we need to preserve what little is left.(Surge Narrows, 2017-12-01)

I live on a neighbouring island that is also being devastated because of clear cut logging. The legal riparian and visual buffers are just not good enough, legislated or not. Currently the allowable riparian cut for example is 10 meters. When the inevitable windthrow happens, this "legislated minimum buffer" is reduced to virtually zero. This is only one example of why the legislation needs to change, and why we must protect the old forests that still exist,(Maurelle Island, 2017-12-01)

Forest companies have no 'right' to take the life-sustaining trees from our ecosystems, anywhere, just to make their owners richer. The least that the corporations can do is to show a token respect for the planet and it's myriad inhabitants by making tiny concessions like leaving precious forest along this road(Surge Narrows, 2017-12-01)
#14
The logging that has already taken place on Read Island has been devastating. Here lives a thriving eco system including wolves, bears, cougars, deer and humans. I believe whats left of the old growth forests and wetlands need be protected for the benifit of all beings. Lets celebrate life and diversity rather than destroy every last inch of it! A clearcut, even after being planted, can not not replace a thriving naturally regenerated forest.(Quadra Island, 2017-12-01)

I use to live on Read Island. It is a place of great natural beauty and needs to be protected.

I am against logging this forest because it is highly valuable to the residents and visitors of Read island, extremely critical for the old growth eco system there and because some species of life not well known in old growth forests are important for research.(Campbell river, 2017-12-01)

I grew up there . it is a extremely safe sanctuary for animals .and future generations of childrsn and family's to grow .and teach .and learn of a life thats almost forgotten by society as a whole .learning to fish and garden and respect.nature , as well as my peers is a priceless gift i have used through out my adult hood .giving me skills to servive .and develop into a well rounded human being .please to not destroy one of Canada's true treasures(Prince george, 2017-12-01)

I am signing to add a voice to those asking for earth stewardship practises in the way we go about our 'business'. There is a need to tread much lighter and pay attention to the details in this day and age. The old methods need refining at times and certain practises need to be reviewed on an ongoing basis.(Mansons Landing, 2017-12-01)

I believe there are more sustainable forestry practices that I would like to see for these remaining rainforest buffers. I also grew up in this forest. I wouldLike to
See the islands forestry in island hands.

I spent many years on Read as a young child. My family still owns property there. This land is unique and ecologically sensitive. Its preservation is important to the community and the island ecosystem. Thoughtless destruction of the land is not only irresponsible and greedy, it is simply shortsighted and unnecessary. I urge you to listen to the locals to find a way to protect the needs of all parties... including those without a voice whose homes stand to be destroyed. Think long -term in making your decisions. This land is home to many.(Cleveland, 2017-12-01)

My family maintains our family home on Read Island. I grew up on Read when it was being clearcut back in the 1970's, and got to experience first hand the damaged roads, mudslides, and logging trucks hurrying along our narrow roads. Some schooldays it would take hours to dig out old truck out of the enormous mudholes just to get to school. The community works hard to keep the roads passable in bad weather, and has installed signs to assist tourists to find their way to our local parks and swimming areas. Please do not allow this to happen again. Please preserve the road corridors and watersheds around the fishbearing streams.(Maple Ridge, 2017-12-01)

The forests and ecosystems on Read island need greater protection from logging operations and better practices need to be established that are in line with environmental conservations priorities.(Vancouver, 2017-12-01)

There is far to little area like this left and to destroy it for a few dollars profit seems criminal to me. We need to preserve beauty, areas that sustain us not destroy them. It takes generations for areas like this to regrow.(Shoreline, 2017-12-01)

I'm a resident of Read Island and it's important to me that Island Timberlands is respectful of sensitive areas here and be responsive to reasonable requests by islanders. There are very few residents here and, between woodlots and the privately held lands of Island Timberlands, 45% of our island is designated for logging. This logging needs to be done in a responsible manner to preserve the other valuable resources of our island such as wildlife, fish habitat, biological diversity and much more.(Surge Narrows, 2017-12-02)

I grew up on Read Island and am still very connected to the place.(Delta, 2017-12-02)

Im signing because Read island is very small island that has been already heavily logged over the past 30 - 50 years, We must protect whats left of our natural ecosystem as well as salvaging our viewscape from the mass harvesting of large companies on so called 'privately managed lands"(read island bc, 2017-12-02)

I’m signing this petition because I believe that logging this beautiful and precious land is a monstrous, evil, and disgusting thing to do. Read Island is home to a strong and lively ecosystem of old growth trees, flourishing plants, and thriving animals, and it is under no righteous circumstance for your company to tear that away. Not only will you be devesating the land by logging, you will be devasting generations of people. Read Island has been home to my family for three generations, and many more generations of all my closest friends. Deforesteation is hideous, and this will be a sight that we have to look at and loath for the rest of our lives. Getting one place to another on Read Island will no longer be a peaceful, serene journey; it will be a haunting, heartbreaking sight that leaves us feeling gutted and hallow. I am, and all my friends and family, are begging your company to stop, and think. Tearing those trees from the earth to use for maybe the next year is not worth multiple lifetimes ofdevastation and sorrow, for the people, and the land. And one last thing, I don’t expect anyone reading this from the other side of the spectrum to understand the wrath and tearing agony that fills me at the thought of this project, but I do at least hope that you can understand that you’re doing more than just a job; you’re hurting people.

I oppose this scale and style of logging on such a small island. It is destroying the diversity of the eco system. This also applies to most islands on the Sunshine Coast.(Maurelle Island, 2017-12-04)

I'm signing this petition out of love for the Discovery Islands and B.C. wilderness that has nourished my soul for 67 years and counting. I have fond memories of walking this road with Discovery Islands children, who are now adults fighting to preserve their home.(Discovery Islands, 2017-12-04)

Read Island is a home to friends of mine, and an idyllic retreat from the developments and business of Vancouver Island and mainland bustle. I've lived from the southernmost to the northernmost tip of Vancouver Island, and it's difficult to find any more relatively untouched places that bring peace, joy, and wonder to my soul. We still need places to explore with our hearts, nurture and connect with our compassion, and discover the depths of our imagination. Read Island is one of those places... not to mention the countless, priceless, homeopathic remedies that are yet not fully understood... and the wildlife that has found one of the last few refuges from the loss of habitat. Please realize that the people, animals, and forest flora will be affected for hundreds of years to come, and many will be lost forever.(Port Alberni, BC, 2017-12-04)

I have spent a lot of time on Read Island and know how important the land is to everyone who lives there. The community has spent so much time protecting what is left and revitalizing salmon streams. We need to protect what is left and understand that this is home to a lot of people and to so many varied species!(North Vancouver, 2017-12-05)

To protect the beautiful forest on Read Island .(Campbell river, 2017-12-05)

Logging is going on everywhere around us. There needs to be a proper plan in place that is strictly regulated by the government, so that we can keep some ecosystems alive. The trees will come back, but it will never be the same especially after climate change. We need to fight for whatever is left and this strip on the road might be the best we can do. Thanks for hearing us out....(Surge Narrows, 2017-12-05)

I lived on the island and walked those roads with my children. That is precious land(Port Angeles, 2017-12-05)

I am signing this petition because I lived on the island for ten years along with my family. My children attended the school at Surge Narrows. The experience of this life style was very positive in their development and they turned out to be very balanced adults with strong moral values. Many children have been raised on this island and they all have turned out to be wonderful adults. The environment of this island was definitely a huge influence on the development. To clear cut this island is a mistake only caused by greed and it will never be the same if this is done . This beautiful island needs to stay as it is so many other children can grow into beautiful well balanced mature adults respecting nature and not selling the natural beauty off to profit only for dollars. Thanks Greg Lang(13530 Crestview Drive Surrey BC V3R6T2, 2017-12-06)
