Upcoming Meeting with County Council! Please Attend!
2015-05-29 05:26:51Hi All,
I have been in communication with Salt Lake County Mayor, Council members and SL Parks and Rec., and I have been informed that the proposal for more off-leash dog areas will be discussed at the Council meeting on Tuesday, June 16th at 4:00pm.
They anticipate a lot of resistance from the residents near the proposed parks, but the Council themselves seem to be in favor of it. So, we need tons of support at this meeting! The public will have a chance to speak, and this is a COUNTY council meeting, meaning regardless of where you live in the valley, this will affect you! There are 2 meetings on Tuesday June 16th that you can support. One will be the formal meeting starting at 4:00pm, and the other will be earlier in the afternoon...time to be determined still. The public will have time at the beginning of the meetings to share, so be on time.
PLEASE put this on your calendar and spread the word to your dog loving friends! This is our chance to show the Council that there is a real demand for more off-leash areas. Come prepared to share your opinions.
The location is 2101 S. State. Room N2-200. Save the date and please share!!
Thank you,
Linda Gregersen

Notes from SLC Council Meeting 3/17/15
2015-03-19 15:57:07I thought the SLC Council meeting was very hopeful in progressing towards more off-leash areas in SLC. The notes are attached...
The Council really emphasized the need for the community to get involved in taking ownership of their dog parks and participate in managing, maintaining, educating others and enforcing proper behavior. The proposed pilot program would be a test period that could be shut down at anytime if it were to become a problem to the rest of the community.
If you live in SLC proper, contact your District Rep and let him or her know that you are in favor of the pilot program and are willing to assist in any way to maintain it! Everyone on the Council was very much in favor of developing new off-leash areas in the City, as most of them are dog owners as well. Some that are particularly in support of it are Erin Mendenhall, Charles Luke, Stan Penford and Luke Garrott. You can find their contact info here:

Follow-up Discussion on
Dog Off-leash Policy Options and Next Steps
Tuesday, March 17, 2015Room 326, City & County Building
451 South State Street
Approximately 4:00 p.m.
This is the next in a series of ongoing discussions about how to meet the Council's goal of expanding dog off-leash opportunities in Salt Lake City. Specifically, the Council's policy goal is to to expand opportunities for residents to enjoy outdoor activities with their off-leash dogs while minimizing impacts on other people, on health and safety, on parks and open space, on nature and wildlife, and on Salt Lake City's budget.
The Council's discussion will be based on the recommendations of a working group formed in April 2014 that studied how this goal could best be met. In addition, the Administration has provided dog off-leash options and proposed changes to the current process of establishing new dog off-leash areas for the Council's consideration.
The public is invited to listen to the Council's discussion. If unable to attend the meeting, listen to or watch the Council meeting live from your computer by visiting slctv.com or by watching SLCTV Cable Channel 17.

IMPORTANT UPDATE TO OFF-LEASH DOG PARK PETITION.
2015-03-12 22:14:31IMPORTANT UPDATE!
I just got off of the phone with Wayne Johnson from Salt Lake Parks and Rec about the 2008 off-leash dog park master plan. He said the master plan was a start, but what they really need is an implementation plan so they can implement it. That could take a year or more, so in the meantime, Parks and Rec has proposed a PILOT PROGRAM in which they would designate areas of some of our existing parks throughout the valley as off-leash, much like Memory Grove. He couldn't say which parks they are looking at, but he assured me they would be spread throughout the valley. They would test it out for about a year and evaluate any changes that needed to be made.
I think this is great news because it could be implemented sooner than later. So, here is what we need you to do.....
Contact SL County Mayor Ben McAdams and let him know that you are in favor of the pilot program for off-leash dog parks. The mayor and council still need to approve this proposal, and apparently, it will be coming up for discussion at their council meeting within the next month!
Mayor McAdam's email is mayor@slco.org.
Also, we want to have a voice at the council meeting when this is discussed. I have requested a meeting with the mayor to find out his opinion on this issue, and will let you know when it will be presented to the council. We would love to have as many people as possible in attendance when it is! Please plan to attend if you can! Council meetings are on Tuesday nights. Stay tuned for more info....

Changes to Off-Leash Dog Parks Petition; Please Read!
2015-02-06 04:41:24Hi Everyone!
Thank you so much for your signatures and comments on this petition! We are on the path to getting more off-leash areas in our valley. Some of the feedback we have received on the petition has been that the wording is not broad enough to include the entire SL Valley, and that it seems to only focus on the Murray/Cottonwood Heights areas.
Therefore, we have changed the wording to include all of Salt Lake County, because we do recognize the need is valley wide. Please reread the petition, and if you know of anyone who didn't originally sign it because they didn't think it would include their area, encourage them to read it again and sign!
The petition will be going out to the mayors of Salt Lake County, Salt Lake City, Murray City, and Cottonwood Heights. We will also be following up with additional petitions to each specific city within the valley. As for now, however, ANYONE in Salt Lake County who wants more off-leash areas should sign the petition so our mayor understands this is a valley wide issue and will hopefully work with the cities within the county on this issue.
Thanks again for your participation!
