#762011-02-03 21:16My husband and I strongly agree on having library time back on a weekly basis. Our children love to read, and enjoy picking out "new" books every week. They should look at the money in the district and how it is distributed. I am an educator myself, and know the importance of this special, quality the students are missing. |

#77 Bring them back!2011-02-04 01:11I see the focus on literacy in my son's school assignements. Why, then, when so much research shows that librarians in schools help improve literacy scores, did we take them away? The simple fact is, it's hard for teachers to get our children literate when they have 35+ students with access to the library once every two weeks. My son has to do a report on King Arthur and I had to take him to the public library because he doesn't go to the school one often enough to get the resources he needs. Please- listen to the parents this time and bring back the librarians! |

#782011-02-04 21:45It's amazing the push to have all students get public library cards and then take 10-steps backwards and only expose student to the library every other week. That is the only exposure many of these students get. It, again, is an example of actions speaking louder than words! |

#79 U 46 Library2011-02-05 00:20Even in this age of digital access to a world of resources; basic research skills need to be taught & developed in our schools. The money is there; if you know where to look. Ask the teachers union to assist in the education of the students. |

#81 School Libraries2011-02-05 01:52Getting students to read is one of the major components of the state goals and testing. Under staffing our Libraries is yet another way for us to get farther away from our goals. |

#842011-02-05 20:07I feel libraries are a very important part of our schools, and don't like seeing them empty part of the school week. |

#87 Torres is sending mixed messages2011-02-07 14:57Mr. Torres' first program when he became Superintendant was to "Get a library card in every student's hands." It seems a contradiction that he would have supported such a cut. Then again, maybe that was his plan all along: to cut school libraries after making sure kids (and parents) could get what was needed at public libraries. Not everyone has easy access to their public libraries. Especially when considering how Library District boundries have been drawn. Example: Some Streamwood kids belong to the Elgin Library Dist. and, though the Gail Borden Library is fantastic, they do not have "unlimited" access to Streamwood's Poplar Creek Library - which is much closer to their own back yard. |

#88 Librarians ARE essential2011-02-07 16:11Districts all over are looking for ways to save money, and districts all over think that cutting librarians is the way to do it. It may look good on paper, but in the long run you are creating a generation of children poorly equiped to disseminate all the information that will bombard them by the time they are 18. Most librarians are highly-skilled and educated professionals (I am a certified school library media specialist with a Masters in Library Science AND a K-9 teacher certification) who know how to connect children to quality literature and how to turn them on to reading. We help navigate your children through the sludge on the internet (and NO, U-46 administrators, Wikipedia is NOT a reliable source) and show them what is good, and safe, for them to use. We ARE essential. Try cutting an administrator or two, or your travel stipend, Dr. Torres. Stop hurting our children! Bring back our library staff!!! |

#90 How to fund library position2011-02-07 18:40How about we cut salaries and useless positions in U-46 Just a few: (Info as 2009) Torres Jose $230,000 Bonner Barbara $200,220 Prince John $199,025 Ponce Abelardo $192,998 If you go to: http://www.familytaxpayers.org/salary.php , select our district and sort by salary. You will see that top salaries belong not to teachers but to admins. This is not right. I do not see any reason superintendent to make quarter million a year. He is not CEO that has to fight for new markets. He is just one admin with big salary that in reality does nothing useful. Cut his pay a half and you can fund two librarian positions!!!! If you agree with me let's write a petition for admin positions and salaries review!!! |

#93 We Need Full Time Librarians2011-02-09 05:07Our children deserve the opportunity to become lifelong readers. They need a chance to develop the reading habit while they are young, so it carries over into their adult lives. We do not have another chance to inspire these early learners to read. Please fund our librarians, before it is too late for our children. |
